The Monuments of Paris Author Talk
Author Event with Violaine Huisman
Saturday, June 6, 2026 | 12:00 PM
Free with Museum Admission

In conjunction with the exhibition "Matisse: Beyond Color," author Violaine Huisman discusses her new book, The Monuments of Paris (Penguin/Random House). Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2026 by Literary Hub, Huisman’s novel centers on a Frenchwoman’s efforts to come to terms with the legacy of her father and grandfather, powerful forces who left a mark on their country’s culture but whose incorrigible womanizing also left a complex mark on their wives and children. Set in the twentieth-century France that shaped Matisse’s outlook on life and art, the book’s investigation of family and wartime reflect how the arts were intertwined with the stories of the people who lived through it.

The conversation will be moderated by the Museum’s Director of Public Engagement & Curatorial Strategies, Jess Van Nostrand.

Gordon created “Palm Oil Ollie” to draw attention to how humans have devastated the natural habitat of these intelligent, sensitive beings by plowing down their forests to plant palm oil plantations. “Ollie” is her tongue-in-cheek visual interpretation of how an orangutan would fortify herself in battle. She is ultimately battling us. I gave much consideration to whether she should give the finger, but settled on this as an appropriate human-like gesture.

This film is a cinematic documentary event film that highlights the two sides of Frida Kahlo’s spirit: a revolutionary, pioneering artist of contemporary feminism, and on the other, a human being tormented by agony and love.

With Asia Argento as narrator, the two faces of the artist will be revealed by pursuing a common thread consisting of Frida’s own words: letters, diaries, and private confessions. The documentary film event will alternate interviews with historical documents, captivating reconstructions, and Frida Kahlo’s own paintings, kept in some of the most amazing museums in Mexico.
