For years, we believed this old house was built by WH Mullins, part of Morristown’s storied past. The history records pointed toward it — until we found something that shattered those assumptions.
In our investigation, we uncovered a far more colorful figure: H.B. Liverman, a man who made a name for himself not as a master builder, but as a con artist. Liverman built this house and others, only to flee Morristown under the cover of night, leaving behind debts and unfinished work. He disappeared into obscurity, dying dirt poor in Norfolk, Virginia, a far cry from his earlier ambitions.
But the story doesn’t end there. After Liverman’s sudden disappearance, the house was auctioned off, and Dr. D.S. Bruner, a respected figure in the community, purchased it for just $700. Little did he know, he was buying a house built on deceit—a structure that had already seen its fair share of scandal.
Years passed, and this house became known as the Mullins Home—until we made a startling discovery. In the basement, hidden among the cobwebs and dust, we found old books belonging to Dr. Bruner’s family. With these in hand, we uncovered the truth: this wasn’t the Mullins Home at all. It was Dr. Bruner’s residence, a piece of forgotten history.
This house now tells two stories: one of H.B. Liverman, the builder who tricked a town and vanished into the night, and the other of Dr. Bruner, who brought dignity to a place built on false promises. The records before the 1930s may be unreliable, but this house, with all its mystery, has its truths waiting to be uncovered.
So, we have to ask ourselves—what other hidden stories lie within these walls? What more could this house reveal if we continue to peel back the layers of its past?
