We’d like to introduce you to Arista Alanis! She is teaching a new class here at River Arts, called “Beyond the Brush.” In this two-part class you’ll experiment with different techniques for applying paint using stencils, spray, and expressive brush strokes.
We asked Arista a few questions about her as an artist:
Q: What keeps you inspired and helps with your creativity?
A: I stay creative because it’s the way I move through the world. A lifelong learner, I’m always wondering, always curious, and always open to discovery; the best part is embracing the unknown. Each day, I go into the studio hoping to reach a place where I surprise myself - to discover something I hadn’t yet imagined, learned, or even known was possible.
Q: Has anyone given you advice that has stuck with you throughout your artistic career?
A: The best advice I ever received came from my parents while I was growing up: “If you enjoy and love the work you do, you’ll be successful.” As an artist, I’ve learned that success isn’t solely about the end result; it’s also about finding passion and fulfillment in your daily activities. When you truly love your creative work, that passion fuels your creativity and makes the work more
than just a job. It becomes a part of who you are.
Q: Is there anything you’d like to add about painting, or teaching painting?
A: Teaching painting has reminded me to trust the process, stay curious, and embrace the unexpected. The best part of making art is not knowing exactly where it will lead, and recognizing that sometimes the most meaningful discoveries happen when we let go of expectations and allow ourselves to simply create.
