Value study:
Value refers to the lightness and darkness of areas in an artwork. White is the lightest value, while black is the darkest. A value scale shows a range of lights and darks.

Art class was really fun tonight! We found this fun tutorial on YouTube and gave it a whirl. Sometimes we work hard at lighting and structure and composition... and sometimes we just need to let loose.

How do you know if a painting is finished? My mother once asked me that question. I told her that when it stops speaking to me, then it is done. This painting still begs for more attention, even as I am wanting to move on. We are going through the refiner's fire together. For me it is a HUGE exercise in self discipline to not begin another painting until this is complete. I am getting closer to the finish line.

A year later and I'm still working on tedious details. I can come up with all kinds of excuses for not holding myself to at least 45 minutes per day. But I won't, because no excuse is good enough. It isn't finished, but it is closer to becoming so.

I have given into the premature indulgence of working on finer details before the background is complete. Stepping away from the bird now so I can focus on the background again.
