FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

26th Annual D.C. Snowmobile Fly-In Brings National Advocacy to Capitol Hill
Snowmobile leaders from 14 states meet with over 100 Members of Congress to champion
responsible recreation, trails and riding areas

Washington, D.C. — April 22, 2026 — Snowmobile leaders from across the country convened in the nation’s capital for the 26th Annual D.C. Snowmobile Fly-In, held April 18–22, 2026. Organized by the American Council of Snowmobile Associations (ACSA), the event united riders, industry leaders, and state association representatives in a coordinated effort to advocate for the future of snowmobiling and outdoor recreation.

During the Fly-In, participants met with more than 100 U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives representing 14 states. These meetings provided an opportunity to highlight the importance of responsible snowmobiling and the critical role federal programs play in maintaining and expanding trail access across the country.

“Snowmobilers understand that access to public and private lands is a privilege—not a right,” said Dave Newman, ACSA President. “We are committed to being good stewards of the land while ensuring that future generations can enjoy the sport responsibly.”

A central focus of this year’s Fly-In was the Recreational Trails Program (RTP), which is set to expire on September 30, 2026. Funded through federal gas taxes paid by off-highway vehicle users—including snowmobilers—this program is instrumental in supporting trail development, maintenance, and safety projects across rural America.

“RTP is a user-pay, user-benefit program that delivers real results in rural communities nationwide,” added Newman. “Without RTP, many trail systems that support local economies and outdoor recreation opportunities would be impacted.”

In addition to meetings with Members of Congress, attendees engaged with senior federal agency officials and partner organizations to discuss shared priorities, including sustainable recreation, land access, and infrastructure investment.

The annual Fly-In serves as a vital platform for connecting snowmobile leaders with policymakers and reinforcing the economic and recreational importance of snowmobiling across the United States.

About the American Council of Snowmobile Associations

Class of 1990 - C.J. Ramstad's wife Karla has passed away. C.J. & son JJ passed away in 2007. Daughter Marly wrote this tribute in Karla's memory.

It is with deep sadness, that I bring the news of the peaceful passing of my mother, Karlita, the icon, the national treasure and beloved queen of Gulfport this morning at 9:22 AM EST.

Karla suffered a catastrophic stroke on Tuesday, March 10th, which paralyzed her right side and her speech, she then suffered a cardiac event that stopped her heart - she was revived but the doctors advised that recovery was impossible, her brain was compromised beyond repair or healing. Knowing Karla as we all do, not being able to crack a joke, lift a glass of rum, or smoke a cig was never in the cards for her so, surrounded by my family, we made the decision to cease life supportive care. In classic Karla fashion, full of resilience and strength to keep fighting, she passed in her sleep peacefully in hospice 9 days later.

Karla had a gigantic community in Gulfport and a big beautiful life here and in her hometown of Minneapolis- she will be forever missed as the spirit of this town but her wild and free legacy will live on in the stories we will tell for all time.
I am in Gulfport now, staying with family at her home- I ask that you do not call, text or send presents, flowers or otherwise- I have detailed how you can help/contribute to her memory/legacy in the GoFundMe link below.
https://gofund.me/a8b2c200f

Please stay tuned for more information on a HUGE celebration of life party we will hold in her honor at Stormrunners - likely in May in Gulfport, Florida. Additionally, an obituary will be published in the Gulfport Gabber and the MN Star Tribune. She will be cremated (so she can have a "hot body one more time" as she used to joke) and set to sea in her favorite Gulfport bay so she can always watch over her favorite people, in her favorite place on earth.

Jerry Schmier was inducted into the ISHOF with the Class of 2016.

Jerald Dean Schmier

Jerald “Jerry” Schmier was born May 18, 1935, to Jacob Schmier and Dora Veto Schmier in a small home on West 18th Street in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He died February 21, 2026, at the age of 90 in his home in West Yellowstone, Montana, surrounded by family.

He lived most of his young life in Idaho Falls. He graduated from Idaho Falls High School. His class was the first class to graduate from the new school in 1954.

Jerry was married on April 7, 1954, to his high school sweetheart, Verlene Jenkins. They are the parents of Cynthia Sue (deceased), Bradley Dean, and Jerald Douglas Schmier.

Jerry’s first job was at the age of 8 for the Salt Lake Tribune delivering newspapers. At the age of 11, he went to work at a local service station. This began his lifelong business journey and entrepreneurship.

Jerry managed several Texaco service stations in Idaho Falls until purchasing a Standard Oil station in West Yellowstone, Montana, in 1967. He moved his family there in the Spring of 1968.

Jerry loved West Yellowstone. He became very involved with the community in various ways. He served on the city council and was mayor at one time.

Being involved with the snowmobile industry, he raced for Bombardier for many years. He became a Skidoo dealer in 1972, making him one of the first Skidoo dealers in the Western United States.

Jerry formed Yellowstone Adventures and purchased several snowmobiles for the public to rent to go into Yellowstone National Park and surrounding areas. Snowmobiles opened a new opportunity for West Yellowstone, keeping businesses open for the winter. Along with his wife, sons, and daughters-in-law, they kept the businesses going until they were sold in 2023.

Jerry loved hunting, fishing, boating, and old cars. In his later years, he purchased a home in Arizona for the winter months and loved to be on the golf course. He missed his family, so he moved back to West Yellowstone in 2016.

He is survived by his wife, Verlene; sons, Bradley (Diana) Schmier and J. Douglas (Stacey) Schmier; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jacob, Kristine, Kevin, Melissa, and Brian; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Cynthia; and his siblings, Jake, Don, and Wanda.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the West Yellowstone Ward, 310 Gibbon Avenue, West Yellowstone, Montana. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2026, at the Rose Hill Cemetery, 2355 Rollandet Street, Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Services will be broadcast live here.
