On This Day in Southern Province History:

April 12, 1912: Boy Scout Troop 1, the first Scout troop in Winston and Salem, is organized. The boys meet at Fairview Moravian Church and at the YMCA.

Becoming an Eagle Scout is a rigorous process. A candidate has to earn 21 merit badges varying in subject from first aid to business, assume leadership roles and execute a large community service project. All of this has to be done before turning 18.

Nearly 1,000 girls and young women will be honored this weekend. It's a major milestone, given the hallowed stature of a rank that has been attained over more than a century by astronauts, admirals, U.S. senators and other luminaries.
