𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗚𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀!!⚾🧢
This collection of mini plastic baseball caps with cardboard standings rack was donated by the Dobson family. The caps were used as bowls for ice cream sundaes and sold at places like Dairy Queen, Baskin-Robbins and A & W which had a restaurant (Aztlan Mexican Grill today) located at 407 West Main Street in Mount Horeb. Major League Baseball has expanded with new teams and divisions since this board was first copyrighted in 1977, including the Milwaukee Brewers’ move to the National League in 1998. Regardless of the changes, Wisconsinites know whose hat we want to see in the top spot!

𝗠𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗯 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺🏈🏈🏈
This recently donated football program features cover art by American artist Lon Keller (1907-1995) who specialized in sports art and is known for his program covers. This program was for a 1953 football game between Fennimore and Mount Horeb High Schools whose team rosters are printed on the back. The inside artwork features an advertisement for Coca-Cola who contracted with the advertising firm Lon Keller worked for to print program covers that they could distribute through their local bottlers to high schools across the country.

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻! 🍁🍂
The Driftless Historium’s monthly 𝙃𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨-𝙊𝙣 𝙃𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 and 𝙃𝙖𝙡𝙛-𝙃𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙃𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 programs returned from their summer hiatus this September. In our popular afterschool program, chilldren in grades K-4 learned about the history and culture of Germany while guests of all ages heard Andrea Nolen discuss her book 𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘯’𝘴 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘯 𝘎𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘍𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘨𝘰 𝘔𝘰𝘣. 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹!🍂🌾🍁
Dale and Julie Thompson recently donated this fanning mill to the Society. It was originally purchased by Dale’s great-grandfather, Levor Thompson (1858–1939), who farmed in Springdale Township (Sections 9 and 10) near the intersection of County Roads P and PD. The mill was later used by Dale’s grandfather, Bert Thompson, and father, Marvin Thompson, on their family farm in nearby Verona. According to Dale, the family used it to process oats. When not in use, they stored it in the barn, tied it up in the rafters and out of the way.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗗𝗼?
A fanning mill is a mechanized farm tool used for winnowing—separating harvested grain from chaff, w**d seeds, straw, and other debris. A series of sieves or screens sorts the seed. Turning the crank shakes the screens and spins fan blades, which blow air across the grain to remove lighter dust and dirt. The result is clean seed ready for milling or planting next season. Popular in America, these hand-cranked mills remained common on farms into the 1920s, when electric models began replacing them after rural electrification. Although much of the original red paint has faded or worn away from heavy use, the mill’s painted decoration is still visible.
