Gato Negro" is the name of a song written by Vincent Pasternak a long time member of " Sidestep". Sidestep, Vincent Pasternak, Barb Truex & Ken Lovelett was a group formed 40 plus years ago for three separate composers to showcase their original material. Many auxiliary musicians have contributed to the music over the years. This particular line up is Vincent Pasternak, composer, vocalist & nylon string acoustic guitar, Barb Truex playing a custom made electric lap dulcimer played with , I think, a glass notar to get that slide effect, Tom Desisto playing the electric & acoustic 12 guitars. And myself playing drums, conga, chime tree, tambourine & suspended cymbal. Engineered By Pete Levin And Tom Desisto.

My new cd featuring a sound sculpture " The Bellatope"It's a contemporary composition by Ryan Chase a professor at Colgate University & the Mivos International String Quartet. The quartet came to Sonart Recording Studio, a place that I built many years ago, pre - covid. At the end of the session I was in the control room listening to what was recorded and really enjoyed it. At this point that I asked Ryan if I could , on my own time, overdub the Bellatope, A sound sculpture I made many years ago. He consented. The only person I could think of to help with this who was adept at handling all the many aspects of the project was Pete Levin. Pete didn't balk at the opportunity. So, we set out to work. First, Pete and I determined which one of the three tacks from each section was the best. Completely subjective on our part. Then Pete proceeded to set up 13 or 14 mics around the Bellatope. We did a sound check on the Bellatope that turned out so good that we used it in the body of the music as a solo. Then came the recording of the Bellatope with the string players which was no easy task given that there was no musical score or conductor for me to follow but we worked through it. Next was editing the 12 movements by balancing the Bellatope with the strings. Pete did an incredible job with this. Also, Pete ended up Mastering the whole thing in his studio. Many people, over the years, wanted to hear the Bellatope in some sort of musical context. Well, thanks To Pete, here it is. I'm hoping to do more Bellatope recordings in many other styles !
This will be posted on my americanpercussion.com page free. It's about 42 minutes long.
