Ceramicists know, that the clay we work with holds memory. I love teaching this.

Here’s a serving dish that I made 23 yrs ago and forgot all about, until yesterday.

I wanted something to plate this lovely golden flush of golden oyster mushrooms
(Pleurotus citrinoplieatus) that popped out fruiting from an elm log out in the backyard.

23 years ago… I was fresh and well into the chemistry and art of batching and testing ^6 oxidation/electric fired ceramic glazes.

Memories in clay.

Such a great team working for our community! Thank you and Congratulations to the committee!

Such a great team working for our community! Thank you and Congratulations to the committee!

The City of Mount Vernon is proud to announce that the city has received its 33rd Tree City USA designation and a Growth Award at last week's reception ceremony.

These awards were given to the City of Mount Vernon for its ongoing efforts to maintain and improve quality of life through a comprehensive tree management program, containing over 5,000 street trees with 400 more planned plantings this year. The program is guided by the Shade Tree & Beautification Committee and the municipal government.

Thank you to the City's Shade Tree & Beautification Committee and the City's Staff for your hard work maintaining and planning Mount Vernon's tree landscape!

So smitten with this lil’ bottle from 🇮🇹 the Woodfire Workshop that I taught in April. Having recovered from a superbug🦠bronchial virus just after returning home, I can say I’m back to 100% and really excited to get new work (and two delayed commissions) done at the Studio!
The open flag is waving and the door is open! Do drop in!

I lost only one piece in the luggage travel pack out after teaching the woodfire workshop last week. It was one of this set of shallow bowls. This form travels well and ends up being something to play around with when the glazing and surface decisions are made before the kiln loading.

All were glazed the same, yet the variation represents the temperature range of the kiln in terms of placement. I had hoped to do some evening out, yet time was a constraint. Observing the glaze from the hottest spot on the left with a lovely pool of ash melt to the coolest spot to at the front load shelves, this glaze looks best in the hot ^10 range, the pieces are a prime example of the heat work in the kiln.

I am typically in the Shino and flashing slip club when it comes to wood firing. My school of thought is that high fire glazes can pretty much be achieved and rather similar using other fuel sources, such as propane in reduction (soda and salt is a whole ‘nother conversation).

Shinos and flashings, and even just simply high alumina claybody with nothing at all are a wood firing palette, imho. And, if I’m going to be doing all that work that wood requires, I’d like the pottery to sing that song of wood and ash, and just clay. And, the rest of the work I brought home to my studio sings that song in lovely harmony.

Circling back to the glaze on the little bowls. My friend Karie did intensive work batching high fire reduction glazes and extensive testing during our six week residency last year at
And knowing how satiny and responsive this glaze is, I’m happy with how they all came out.

More later, as I happened to have picked up a wicked travel cold and went immediately to get a strep test this morning. Thankfully, it is negative and just a mean cold bug. Setting me back a day for some much needed R&R. So good to be home.

Comments on your school of thought on wood firing are welcomed! And of course just a hey, hello always brightens the day too. See you at the Studio later this week.
