Silkwood Inn Museum

Silkwood Inn Museum The Inn is normally open the first Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. However, due The inn was built in 1827.

It is the only remaining original structure along the Old Shawneetown-Kaskaskia Trail that connected communities in Southern Illinois during the early 1800s. Also known as the Silkwood Tavern, the inn was a popular stop along one stagecoach line. It was built by Brazilla (Basil) Silkwood, who had come to Illinois from Pennsylvania. Both Silkwood and the inn are at the heart of a famous local legen

d that is based in fact. While visiting a plantation in Georgia in the 1830s, Silkwood became acquainted with several slaves. Among them was a young girl named Priscilla. When the owner of the plantation died, the slaves were sold and Priscilla was bought by a Cherokee chief and taken to live on a reservation. When the Indians were moved from the reservation in 1838 along the Trail of Tears, they passed through Southern Illinois on their way to the Indian Territory. Once again, Silkwood's path intertwined with Priscilla's. Silkwood was in Jonesboro for a business trip when the Indians moved through the area. He recognized Priscilla, and bought her for $1,000 in gold. Priscilla was taken to the inn, where she was accepted as a member of the family. She died in 1892 and was buried beside the Silkwoods in the Reid-Kirkpatrick Cemetery, about two miles northwest of the inn.

Wanted to "pop in" and ask a question . . . What are some of the sayings that your grandparents or parents used to say that you don't hear much of today? Such as "butter my buns and call me a biscuit" or "I've not seen you in a month of Sundays".

Here at the Silkwood Inn Museum we hear all sorts of stories from our visitors regarding family, family sayings/doings and we enjoy hearing them. So, we thought we'd just ask our followers to comment with some sayings of days gone by. We appreciate your participation.

**We do ask that you keep it rated PG 😉 . . .

We here at the Historical District and Inn Museum are staffed by volunteers (a person who works for an organization without being paid). Most all of our volunteers work full-time or part-time jobs and/or volunteer with other community organizations. If you send us an email or instant message, they cannot always get back to you right away. It might be 24 to 48 hours before you receive a response, or depending on schedules, it might take a bit longer. But know, we will get back to you as soon as we can. We are not trying to make excuses, just stating facts. Life happens and we don't always have control of schedule changes or unexpected events. We appreciate you and your understanding. Thank you.

West Franklin Historical District and Silkwood Inn Museum:

In 1995 the West Franklin Historical District and Genealogical Society was formed through volunteers wanting to restore and rebuild the old Mulkeytown Grade School building into a museum. The facility houses a museum, genealogy room, Veteran room, train room, an old school house room, a Buckner / Coello room, a Christopher room, and a Zeigler / Royalton room. Class pictures, sports pictures, and sport trophies from the Mulkeytown Grade School are on display. Mining and Indian artifacts are also onsite and displayed.

In 1984 the Mulkeytown Historical Association was formed to help with the restoration and repairs of the Silkwood Inn which was partially destroyed by fire in November of 1983. The group sole purpose was to restore and rebuild the Inn as it once stood in the mid-1800s.

Both the Genealogical Society and the Historical Association worked hard to bring history back to life in west Franklin County; however due to most of the founding members passing and volunteers being limited at both facilities the decision was made in 2007 to merge the groups into one. This new merger formed what is now the West Franklin Historical District and Silkwood Inn Museum.

The West Franklin Historical District facility had history information for most all of West Franklin County. The information included: Buckner, Christopher, Coello, Mulkeytown, Royalton, Sesser, Valier, and Zeigler. All with designated rooms at the facility to share their history and information. In late 2022, Sesser and Valier came and removed their information from the facility. Their information is now located within their own facilities. Our facility (the Historical District) still has history information for the towns of Buckner, Christopher, Coello, Mulkeytown, Royalton, and Zeigler. Each of these towns has a space to share their information with visitors to the facility.

West Franklin Historical District is operating from donations received from our fundraising events which include our third Saturday meals, the Spring, Fall, and Holiday Craft & Vendor Fairs, and individual donations.

We appreciate you and your continued support for both the Historical District and Inn Museum.

Thank you!
