Good philosophy should bring images to mind. This Virginia Ball Center seminar asks students to move in both directions. Philosophy, primarily from contemporary writers, will be the content for image making. In academics and in our culture, there is more discussion about what good art makes us think about than there is on what images good philosophy calls to mind. Nonetheless, we are under-skilled
at both. Making Ideas Visible entwines ideas and image making in ways that are important for understanding who we are as individuals and as a culture. The primary goal of this seminar will be to create works of art infused with philosophic ideas. Students will give public presentations about how philosophy fuels artistic creativity and how artistic creativity fuels thinking about philosophic ideas. The seminar will culminate in a gallery show and sale with proceeds to support K-12 art education in Muncie.
