New at the museum! Meet the Anomalocaris!

The Anomalocaris was marine arthropod that first emerged during a burst of biodiversity called the Cambrian Explosion (approx. 541 to 520 million years ago). During this time, the Anomalocaris was an apex predator of the sea, using its front-facing appendages to grasp onto prey. The fan-like swimming flaps lining its body quickly propelled it through the water.

Until recently, scientists believed the Anomalocaris went extinct during the late Cambrian (approx. 490 million years ago). However, this specimen was preserved in Ordovician rock (approx. 443 to 487 million years ago), meaning that the Anomalocaris persisted millions of years longer than previously thought.

Fun Fact: Anomalocaris’ name roughly translates to “weird shrimp” because the first fossils found heavily resembled a modern shrimp. Despite its name, the two are not closely related.
