Families are invited to celebrate this holiday by participating in a variety of activities, including crafts and story time with Latin Thunder. As a young Mexican American boy growing up near the Mississippi River in Muscatine, Juan Fourneau dreamed of becoming a professional wrestler. After training in Dallas, Texas, he returned to Iowa and began his independent wrestling career. To honor his Mexican roots, he created the masked Lucha Libre character of Latin Thunder. This project is supported by Muscatine Charities and the Quad City Arts, through the Arts Dollars re-granting program, supported by The Illinois Arts Council Agency, a state agency, The Hubbell-Waterman Foundation, and the Quad Cities Community Foundation - Isabel Bloom Art Education Endowment, and the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine.

Muscatine and the Civil War exhibition presents original documents,
personal artifacts, and a re-created battlefield campground to explore the stories of the Muscatine people who endured the struggles of the Civil War. A visual projection of Muscatine soldier Daniel J. Parvin reading from his letters helps visitors encounter the realities of camp life. This exhibition feature was originally installed in the 2011 Civil War exhibition and was funded through a grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust.

Thomas McKenney was an early advocate for Indigenous
Americans and the survival of their cultures. Between 1836 and 1844, he published “History of the Indian Tribes of North America”, a series of portfolios that featured hand-colored lithographs based on paintings by prominent portrait painter Charles Bird King. In addition to biographies written by McKenney, a large essay on the history of Indigenous Americans by writer James Hall was included. This exhibit will showcase over 30 McKenney & Hall prints from the Muscatine Art Center’s permanent collection.

An Iowa native based in the Iowa City area, Mark Stevenson is an artist whose works are both visually appealing and thought-provoking. Stevenson began painting as a child, but his recognizable style began to emerge in his late teens. A tragic accident at 32 taught him important life lessons and gave him more time to paint. He strives to paint pictures that express who he is, often saying his goal is to “bring joy, fun, and beauty to the world.”
