Summer is almost here, and we've got the bullfrogs to prove it! 🐸 Our Eager Explorers early childhood class spotted some frogs at the Nature Center yesterday. Bullfrogs spend winter in an underwater dormant state called brumation and have to wait for the water to warm up before they can emerge, so they show up later than the terrestrial frogs of the area, like wood frogs. They're finally starting to get a move on and their mating season is just beginning.

Once their eggs hatch we will have plenty of opportunities to find their tadpoles later in the summer: pond dipping is a Summer Nature Camp tradition, and we have a free pond dipping-themed Adventures in Nature program for children in June. Click the links below to sign up, and we hope to see you there!

🐢 Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢

Yesterday this Snapper came in from being picked up by a good Samaritan on I-95. After assessing and cleaning her abrasions we released her back into the wild at a very safe location where she can celebrate this lovely holiday!

Our turtle friends can’t wait to attend Mister Rogers’ Turtle-y Awesome Birthday Bash this Saturday from 10:00-2:00 at the Niantic Children’s Museum! 🐢🥳

We will be celebrating not only Mister Rogers, but World Turtle Day too! Meet some of our resident turtles, sing happy birthday, and the first twenty kids to arrive will participate in a scavenger hunt all about turtles!

Best of all... activities (and cake) are free with Museum admission! 🎉

On this Wildlife Wednesday, we are so happy to highlight these two adorable baby opossums! This duo came to us after being rescued this past Sunday. The 75 day old male was found in New London and the 85 day old female, Rainbow, comes to us from Gales Ferry. They are being looked after by our Animal Care team with the help of our homeschool students who can be seen above aiding in serving last night’s dinner!

Here are some Opawesome-facts!

🐾Opossums are marsupials meaning that they are “pouched” mammals, just like kangaroos. However, their pouces open vertically down the center of the abdomen rather than horizontally
🐾The name “opossum” is derived from the Algonquin word “apasum” which means white animal
🐾Riding on Mom: When the babies outgrow the pouch at around two months of age, they climb out and will hitch rides clinging to their mother’s back as she forages

Check out these awesome events and volunteering opportunities this week at the Nature Center! We’d love to see you! 🌸🤗🌟

Welcome to Wildlife Wednesday!

We will be sharing stories and fun facts every week to hopefully inspire our community to enjoy and learn more about the local environment!

We’re kicking this series off with Chartreuse season! This beautiful light green is very prominent in early spring as more sunny days begin and can be seen on almost all budding trees. Later in the summer, sunlight and chlorophyll will transform this beautiful color into a more lush, dark green.

Our Education Director Jess and her family celebrate Chartreuse Season each year by reciting “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost!

We are so grateful to the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut for choosing DPNC as one of their Chamber Foundation grant recipients!

The Foundation's grant will support the Nature Center in an expansion of environmental education opportunities through the development and implementation of curricula for middle and high school students throughout New London County. Thank you for this opportunity and we are thrilled to continue inspiring our community to connect with nature! 🦉
