We're celebrating with why THIS BUILDING MATTERS! For 90 years, the Stone Fort Museum has served SFA and the East Texas region through education, preservation, and storytelling. Collaborating with campus, regional, state, and national partners, the museum creates exhibits and programs that highlight the rich history of Nacogdoches and East Texas. Designed, researched, and built in-house with the talent of SFA students, these award-winning exhibits have earned recognition from the American Association for State and Local History and the Texas Historical Commission. Exhibits, collections, events and programs - the museum thrives as a hands-on learning laboratory where SFA student interns from across disciplines gain real-world experience while preserving and sharing our community’s stories!

We're celebrating with why THIS BUILDING MATTERS! The Nacogdoches Historical Society reformed in 1934 with the purpose of rebuilding the Stone Fort as the town's first museum. The location of the Texas Centennial structure on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University was chosen by SFA’s first president, Dr. Alton Birdwell and architect, Hal Tucker. On October 16, 1936, Nacogdoches opened the Texas Centennial building and new museum.

The fight to save the original stone house from demolition in 1901, led by Cum Concilio Club, was one of the first statewide preservation efforts. In the end, the building was destroyed but the Club saved the stones with a vision to rebuild. The Stone Fort Museum honors their work with a biennial preservation award! Past Recipients: Francis ‘Ab’ Abernethy, Bobby Johnson, Birdie Wade, James Corbin, Tom Middlebrook, Steve and Sheryl Hartz, Mable Hall, Frances Shofner and Rick Still.
The club built a one-story memorial structure in 1907 and began collecting Nacogdoches material culture. From the memorial building, Nacogdoches citizens launched the Nacogdoches Public Library.
