My wife and I for 26 years have been part of the Historic District of Nacogdoches Texas. Our gallery building has been sold and we were given 30 days to vacate for a new real estate related office. Our solution was to start construction immediately on our 157 acres with frontage on State Highway 7 East of Nacogdoches. Our family, friends, and a group of Christians from Henderson Texas have given up their time and labor to help us overcome our dilemma. Amazing progress has taken place within 21 days. We will be without a physical location until construction is completed. Until then we will operate our business on cellphones for your needs in picture framing & art. Linda & I Thank You for your loyalty and friendship. Harold - 936-5545844 Coats Gallery - 936-5605844

Here is a little history on how this painting came about. During the 90's, I decided to do an art show at a balloon festival in San Marcos, TX. My two sons, Shannon Coats and Adam Coats, volunteered to accompany me to set up and assist. When we arrived, all the artists were busy setting up their booths. I noticed that only two balloonists were present. We soon found out that in a dispute between balloonists and promoters, the balloonists decided not to attend, leading to the cancellation of the show. We decided to pack up and visit some galleries in the Hill Country and enjoy an unplanned mini vacation together. The first gallery we visited was in Gruene, TX. The owner enjoyed our visit and invited me to do some shows. He offered the key to his gallery and key to a cabin nearby. I couldn't turn that down. The gallery location was next to the Guadelupe River and the famous Gruene Dancehall, which was next to the Gristmill Restaurant, owned by Richard and Barabara DeWitt of Nacogdoches, TX. I came back to do a show on a planned date during the summer. I set up art outside the gallery on a beautiful patio and lawn, sharing the presence of majestic oak trees. I was there alone running a gallery, selling both the owners' art and mine, staying in a cabin I knew nothing about. The first morning of several days there, I noticed a beautiful magnolia tree. I took advantage of a step ladder nearby and took some pictures of blooms and limbs with my camera. I sketched a painting, rearranging some limbs and blooms which enabled me to create the painting, "Southern Temptation." Each painting that I create seems to have a history of how it came about.

In 2002, I received an unexpected phone call from Canada. It was a representative of Hanson Brick Company, located in Charlotte, North Carolina, which is a subsidiary of London-based Hanson plc. He informed me that they had made five large acquisitions in the United States and Canada and were commissioning an artist to represent each region. They needed an artist to represent the Southwest Region and were calling me to be that fifth artist. They wanted me to choose a brick building to paint. Because of the history and age of the Old University Building located in Nacogdoches, Texas, I chose it to be the subject of my painting. The representative informed me they had reserved Texas Lil's Dude Ranch in Justin, Texas, to be the venue to bring together contractors from all over the region. They were planning a BBQ cookout, quick draw gun fighters, western-style photos, and dancing to Johnny Dee and the Rocket 88's. During the event, they planned to unveil the painting and supply gift prints for me to sign and give to invited guests. The original of our Old University Building was displayed in print form in 17 countries having Hanson locations. The original was retained by Hanson Brick Company.

When an artist devotes a lot of time to create a painting, they say the artist becomes part of the creation. There will always be a close connection of this beautiful Grecian architectural style building, full of history and feelings of the past. It is a personal privilege to be able to show my work within the mysteries of this museum.

The Old University Building is one of three colleges charted by the Republic of Texas around 1845. The two-story building was completed in 1859 and is the only one whose original building is still standing. The building has been used for education since that time, except during the Civil War, when it served as a convalescent home and hospital for Confederate Soldiers and during the Reconstruction when it housed Federal offices. Today the building houses a museum to education in East Texas and its lower level is furnished for use as public meeting rooms.

Original oil painting: "Hankerin' For Home" by Harold Coats.
(No prints currently available)

Being an artist is an occupation for me. Starting as a child through present day, I have produced many paintings, sketches, and drawings. I do what I love to do and will always create new art. I do have other fields of interest as well, among these being history, science, medicine, and chess. While I paint, I prefer to listen to documentaries on different subject matters. I'm also an avid collector of books on all of these subjects. I have traveled many states selling prints of my work to many galleries. Through these travels, I picked up a lot of history, legends, and information from serious collectors.

The following painting depicts a part of our American history and the solitude of being trapped away from home in an assigned location. The inspiration for this painting was taken from a Civil War reenactment in Mansfield, Louisiana. They wouldn't allow me on the field without proper period attire, as they were filming at the time. With cannons and rifle fire going on all around, it really set the tone for what it might have been like. This particular piece was painted in 1988. It's one of many that I will show on occasion of my interpretation of historical events.

The original of this print was a watercolor titled "The Old Stone Fort" by Harold Coats. The image was inspired by a vintage photo of the structure taken when it was located at Main Street and Fredonia Street (now the location of Commercial Bank of Texas) in Nacogdoches, Texas.

According to its official site, "Case Piedra, later known as the Old Stone Fort, was built by the Spanish in 1779 as the first mercantile in Nacogdoches. It remained the tallest structure in town for nearly a century and often served as the seat of civil authority The building was the scene of many historic moments in early Texas. Over the years, the building served many purposes, finally ending up as a saloon. In 1902, it was dismantled. The original stones were saved and used to create a reconstruction, which resides on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University."

The signed and open prints retail for $45.00. The image is approximately 6" x 7". The paper size is 13" x 14" framed. Framed, as shown, retails for $230.00
