I just finished reading a wonderful book, Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. It is over 600 pages and left me with an impression that I knew him and many of our country's founding fathers very well!

This one I painted in 2016 for and art show at the Fargo VA Hospital, and won best of show with. I was attempting to paint a 105mm artillery battery firing at night and lit by Illumination rounds fired from our mortar platoon. In it notice red & white poles we called barber poles. In 1966 we had no satellites or GPS. Our surveyors used celestial navigation, as did ships at sea to know where they were and to compute firing information. The barber poles were used by the gunners to calculate angles of fire.

I made 15,000 steps today, a record for me. It was 85 degrees and windy. I was treated like royalty today at 1,5 artillery. It's a wonderful day I won't forget. The FDO, fire direction officer, invited me to watch adjusting fire unto targets. It is the job I did in 1966. The thousands of calculations are done by computers these days, but when electricity is down they go back to a paper chart and protractor, which is what we did in the times before computers existed!

I donated two of my Vietnam battle paintings to 1-5 artillery, my old unit. Today was family day. They seemed delighted. We toured the Custer house before returning to our hotel. Tomorrow we'll tour the 1st Infantry museum and the Cavalry museum. Then we will start our journey back to North Dakota.
