Setting the record straight about the Samuel Adams House

We’ve heard a rumor going around that the Samuel Adams House will be demolished. That is not true.

The Samuel Adams House is owned by Huron Charter Township, and the Historical Commission is actively working to preserve it, care for its collections, and share its history with the community. That work includes ongoing research, plans to update the house’s office so records can be properly kept and digitized, and longer-term plans to recognize the house with a state historical marker.

The house is part of Huron Township’s story, and as we approach the Township’s bicentennial in 2027, preserving places like it matters more than ever.

If you hear something about the house that concerns you, please reach out to the Historical Commission or come to a Commission meeting. We’re always glad to answer questions and share what we’re working on. And if you have photos, stories or memories of the Adams House, we’d love to hear them.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 🎀

Today, we hold in our thoughts our neighbors living with breast cancer, those who have completed treatment, the families and friends offering care, and the people we remember with love.

Support can be practical and personal: a ride, a meal, help with everyday tasks, or simply listening. Ask what would be helpful and respect each person’s privacy and choices.

Throughout October, let’s make room for compassion, reliable information, and support for those affected by breast cancer.

For breast cancer information and support resources, visit the American Cancer Society:

it was Oakwoods Metropark, this landscape held homes and workplaces. 🌿

The Huron-Clinton Metroparks’ 2018 Willow & Oakwoods Master Plan records houses along Old South Huron Road and a former meat-packing plant in the area that became Oakwoods. Its cultural-history map identifies the industrial site as the former Parkway Meats facility.

That is one chapter in a much longer history. The plan also describes archaeological research documenting thousands of years of human use along this part of the Huron River.

An old road name or family photograph can help connect today’s park with the people who lived and worked here. Does your family have memories, photographs or records of Old South Huron Road or Parkway Meats? Share an approximate date and what you know about the source. Please retain your originals.

A windmill with roots in two communities. 🌾

The 1923 Monitor Model C windmill preserved at Romulus Historical Park originally stood on a farm in Sumpter Township. According to the City of Romulus, Tutt Mach moved it to his Romulus home in 1970 and donated it to the Romulus Historical Society in 1986.

Sheldon Chandler led its restoration, completed on May 4, 2004, with help from volunteers. Its journey connects our neighboring communities through farming history and the work of people who chose to preserve it.

Do you remember a windmill on a local farm? Share the location and approximate year, or tell us about a family photograph. Please retain your original photographs and records.

Flat Rock once had an airport. ✈️

According to the City of Flat Rock’s published history, Nan-Bar Airport operated from the 1930s into the early 1960s. During World War II, the grass airfield served as an accessory field for Naval Air Station Grosse Ile. Navy pilots used it for short-field landing instruction and emergency landings.

That aviation chapter is part of the history of Huron Township’s neighboring communities, alongside the roads, rivers and railways that connected people across Downriver.

Does your family have a photograph, logbook or recollection connected to Nan-Bar Airport? Tell us the approximate year and who preserved the record. Please keep original documents safe.

Did you know? Belleville and Van Buren Township share a history, but they are distinct communities. 🗺️

Van Buren Township was created from Huron Township on April 6, 1835. Belleville later incorporated as a village in 1905 and as a city in 1946. Those changes matter when tracing an old address or looking for a family record: the name on a document reflects its own time.

Which Belleville street, business or neighborhood would you like us to explore next? Share a name and an approximate decade to help start the search.

Names in stone, stories still to discover. 🌿

This photograph from James Downey’s visit to Oakwood Cemetery shows the Stoflet monument and the surrounding burial ground. It gives us a real place to begin exploring the family histories connecting our communities.

The photographed burial index includes Vreeland and Wagar entries, among many others. An index can point us toward a person, but matching that entry to a life story takes more work: inscriptions, obituaries, family records and other documents. Similar names alone do not establish that two records describe the same person.

Do you have an Oakwood family connection or a photograph that could help identify someone remembered here? Share a name and approximate dates, or tell us about a family record you have preserved. Please keep your original photographs and documents safe.

Follow the Huron Charter Township Historical Commission as LOCAL ROOTS explores Huron Township and neighboring communities, including Flat Rock and Brownstown.

Big shoutout to Sindi Fendt for sharing these awesome pieces of local history! 🏺✨

Sindi sent over photos of the two Huron–New Boston Centennial souvenirs she still has from the week-long festival back in June 1967—a commemorative plate and a matching ashtray!

The plate features the classic map of Michigan pointing straight to Wayne County, complete with the intricate floral transferware rim and the official 1967 centennial emblem.

Who else in the Huron Township or New Boston area remembers the '67 festival, or still has some of these souvenirs tucked away at home? 🙋‍♂️👇
