Calling All Artists! Submissions close on May 31!

Like so many other Museum visitors, the late Dan North of Litchfield, CT, was so taken with the view of Walnut Hill Park from the New Britain Museum of American Art that he proposed a biennial painting contest depicting the park.

The contest winner will receive a prize of $1,000 courtesy of North, whose New Britain ancestors donated the 10-acre site used to create the park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Olmsted, who also designed Central Park in New York City, was greatly inspired by the artwork of American artist Frederic Church, who is represented in the Museum’s collection.

Artists (18 and older) may depict the park from any view they choose, in any medium they prefer. Size of the artwork is up to the artist, up to 52 inches in length or width. Applicants must email their name, an image of their work, title, dimensions, and medium to [email protected] (with the subject line: Walnut Hill Painting) by May 31, 2026. The receiving date for works will follow.

The winner will be chosen through a online public vote in July. The winning entry will be displayed during Nor’Easter, the Museum’s Annual Juried Member’s Exhibition in August 2026.

"The Museum of the Old Colony: An Art Installation by Pablo Delano" is a conceptual, site-specific, and continually evolving project that confronts the complex legacies of U.S. colonial rule in Puerto Rico by re-contextualizing archival photographs, books, artworks, objects, and moving pictures such as newsreels and documentaries.

The exhibition is on view at the New Britain Museum of American Art through July 5.

During your visit, be sure to read the Interpretive Guide as you walk through the exhibition. Written by consulting curator, Dr. Amanda Guzmán (Trinity College), the Interpretive Guide can be accessed via the QR codes or one of the laminated copies at the start of the exhibition.

The Flora Humphrey Bentley Gallery has been refreshed!

Updating this permanent collection installation of the Museum's earliest works was the first project of the Hamm Family Curatorial Fellow Lydia Holleck. This fellowship has been made possible by a generous contribution from the Hamm Family, who have established a fund for collections activation—ensuring that exceptional and often under-exhibited objects are thoughtfully researched, contextualized within the American story, and brought into public view.

Lydia worked with the Museum’s Collections and Exhibitions team to review more than 80 objects—paintings, drawings, textiles, silhouettes, and early photographs—dating from roughly 1730 to 1850. Guided by the goal of telling a cohesive story of early portraiture, they refined this group through close study and collaboration, selecting works based on condition, conservation needs, and display considerations.
