Great news for the Heart of America Wing: our cadet (and youngest member) Mareo Mares won a CAF pilot scholarship this month. Sponsored by the CAF and the Ray foundation, the CAF pilot scholarship awards up to $12,000 to potential pilots for use in attaining their license. Candidates must be between 16 and 19 years old, have passed the private pilot written exam, and possess a valid FAA medical. Mateo submitted his application recently and was informed that he'd won early this month. Mateo is a relatively new member to the CAF and we look forward to following his aeronautical progress in the years to come. Congratulations, Mateo!

Reminder this Saturday is the general meeting for the CAF Heart of America Wing. This is your chance not only to find out what is going on around the hangar but join in some exceptional camaraderie while enjoying a great program. This month’s guest speaker is Norma Donlon. Norma is a wife, mother of 5, grandmother of 7, great-grandmother of 3, and a volunteer, advocate, speaker, author, Ambassador for Wreaths Across America, and Ambassador for the National Medal of Honor Leadership Center. During her 55 years of marriage to Roger Donlon, who was a career Soldier, they moved 16 times in 20 years. As well as Army posts all around the United States, they had 3 overseas postings to Thailand, Panama and Japan.
Some of the awards and achievements of Norma include the “Civilian Service Medal” from the Department of the Army, “Shield of Sparta” from the National Infantry Association, “Honorary Member” of the National Special Forces Association, “Maggie Raye Award” and “Norma Donlon Care Provider Program” from the Special Forces Trust, “Medal of Honor” from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution; their most prestigious award. Our annual Dinner Dance on June 13 featured a wonderful meal, great music, and a dramatic thunderstorm to top off the evening. Named in honor of CAF-HOA member Fred Wicke's late wife, Marie, the event has become a cherished tradition for the Heart of America Wing and remains one of our largest fundraisers each year. Once again, the caterers provided an excellent dinner, while the KC Variety Band kept guests entertained with music spanning the 1940s through the present day.
Fortunately, our friends at Advanced Aviation next door agreed to store our Stearman in their hangar for the night. Around sunset, a powerful storm front swept through the area, producing two tornadoes—both fortunately north of us—and straight-line winds exceeding 80 mph. Had the Stearman remained outside, it likely would still be airborne! As a result of some good planning by the dance committee there were no injuries and everyone enjoyed a great meal, music, friends and good time.

The best way out of the doghouse is to purchase two tickets to the Heart of America Hangar Dinner/Dance and take your significant other out for a lovely evening of great food, socializing with friends and the fascinating ambiance of vintage airplanes and vehicles. Research has proven that two dance tickets are worth one trip out of the doghouse. Don’t miss your opportunity, you will have a great time also. FYI my experience has shown me that you can save this get out of the doghouse opportunity, they keep for up to six months without freezing, vacuum sealing or canning.

We had a great Open Hangar Day yesterday. Not too hot, and the rain held off until we had everything picked up and put away. Lots of visitors---someone estimated around 400. We even ran out of hotdogs twice!
Thanks to all the volunteers who made it possible. We couldn't do it without you!

It's alive! First engine start in 10 years. Still a little work to do before it's flyable, but this feels like real progress toward our restoration project!
