In 2001, our studio completed these custom stained-glass windows for St. Rita Catholic Parish in Clarklake Michigan. The primary window in the series titled: “The Landing of Noah’s Ark” [1] comes from the Genesis flood narrative. The initial vision for the window was to capture the celebration experience after 40 days and 40 nights on the ark.

In an article by the Detroit Free Press in 2011, which showcased the Michigan Stained Glass Census - a project of Michigan State University Museum, our Noah’s Ark window was the featured image with the caption: “Not all stained glass in the census is old. “Noah’s Ark,” at St. Rita Catholic Church in Clarklake, is from 2001.” The window was one of five selected as “5 cool stained-glass windows in Michigan.” The other studios that made it into the top five were Detroit Stained Glass Works, Tiffany Glass & Decorating Co. and Louis Tiffany Studios. Here is a look back at one of our projects from August 2019 for the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools (GTACS): Immaculate Conception Elementary in Traverse City, Michigan.

From start to finish the project took over a year with illustration and design into the final installation. Based on the vision for the project, our team began the creative process with research into liturgical stained-glass windows from the Renaissance period to pull-off this authentic Renaissance-style custom stained glass window. Richard E. who led the project added some context in an article for our friends at UpNorthLive: “What makes this work most unusual is that all the 1,833 pieces of glass that make up this elaborate window were decorated using ancient glass painting techniques -- the same technique used in the 14th century when the stained-glass windows were being assembled on the Notre Dame Cathedral Paris. The only difference is that we used ceramic kilns to permanently fire this paint onto the glass instead of the wood-fired kilns used in 14th century Paris.” [1]

The fused glass elements in several areas of the window involved a process of sifting powdered glass (or frit) onto individual pieces of glass. Primarily, this technique was used to create the repeating pattern in the outer border and the gradient of the sand dunes in the background.

The window features iconic renaissance figures with the angel, Gabriel, and the Mother of Jesus at the Annunciation. Additionally, we brought in elements unique to the Grand Traverse Bay area, notice the background sand dunes and the turquoise waters of Lake Michigan. The completed window stands 16 feet tall and 8 feet wide with a total of 1,833 pieces of glass.

Here is a look at our historic restoration project from August 2025 for St. Francis Xavier Petoskey, where we completed phase two of a project that began in early 2023.

From St. Francis Xavier’s project page the story goes like this: "In the late winter of 2023, after Mass one Sunday, a concerned and observant parishioner approached Deacon Paul with a surprising message: “Jesus is moving.” Unsure of what she meant, he asked for clarification. She pointed to the large Ascension window near the organ on the south side of the church, where — with each gust of wind — the stained glass seemed to pulse in and out. It turned out she was right: Jesus was moving. Upon closer inspection, it became clear that the retaining bar above Jesus’ head and the lead seam along his left side had broken. A portion of the window was dangerously close to detaching. Our maintenance crew acted quickly to secure a temporary fix, and a stained glass restoration company, Omnibus Studios, was brought in to assess the damage." [1]

In early May of 2023, our studio began the first phase of the restoration process for these quite literally priceless Emil Frei originals. The late-great Emil Frei is of course a household name in the world of stained glass for his mastery in the Munich style. Mr. Frei, an already established stained glass master artist, emigrated from Germany somewhere around 1895 and started his own studio in 1898 which is still in operation today in St. Louis under the name Emil Frei & Associates, Inc. [2] The windows are estimated to have been created and installed between 1910 and 1915, shortly after the church building was completed in 1908. [1]

Our studio has been a trusted resource for historic restoration of stained glass windows and this project was no exception. We have often been a go-to for high-profile projects, in part, due to our in-house skill with replicating the original painted detail especially faces, hands and ornamentation. [3] Fortunately, we didn’t have to duplicate any of the faces or hands this time, which would have been a little bit like replicating a Rembrandt– we could do it, but it wouldn’t be that easy. We also relied on our rare collection of European hand blown glass to match the original quality and color. When we were done, no one could tell the difference between the pieces that had been restored and the original, which is what you want!

Given the priceless nature of these windows, a major objective was to eliminate additional risk of damage during the removal, restoration and re-installation process. Our team utilized every ounce of past experience and even built a special lightweight holding frame that they were calling “the cradle” as they treated these windows like babies all the way through. One of our craftsmen said: “These aren’t just stained glass windows!” in reference to the fact that they are some of the finest in the world.

While we were assessing the windows in the studio it was discovered that the church for some period of time was likely heated with coal and the windows had soot all over them. As you can imagine, this diminishes the vibrance and the amount of light that can pass through the glass. We polished and cleaned these babies up, restoring them to their former glory.

Elevation was another factor for this one, with the peak of the tallest windows reaching 25-30 feet in the air. We used multiple boom lifts from the outside and our trusty yellow scaffolding on the inside for a seamless and systematic removal and reinstall. Because of the lightweight materials used to create “the cradle.” Our team could lift it easily with a pulley system to reach the upper panels.

Another facet of this project was the gothic arched wooden tracery frame distinguished by the two vertical members that curve left and right criss-crossing at the top. Fun fact: the original use of the iconic gothic arch is meant to mimic a canopy of trees. We also gave the exterior coverings an upgrade, from age faded plastic to our recommended museum quality clear laminated tempered glass that protects the restored stained glass windows from the elements while allowing the full beauty of these priceless works to shine through. Given who we are, we always prefer glass to plastic!

While St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church is not a museum; they are open for Mass and might even give you a tour if you ask nicely. Either way, be sure to stop in and see these windows as they are some of the best in the world, and with stained glass, viewing in person is always recommended. We can't promise you won’t see Jesus moving, but if you do, it’s not because of us!

Last week our team was in Metro Detroit installing two emerald and amber ‘50s style windows for our New Haven Coney Island client. While our studio is now based in New Era, Michigan, we love being back in Detroit where it all began for us in 1973. Learn more about the story and our studio here: omnibusstudios.com/about

With these custom windows, the intent was to add some color when you first walk in the door, while also nodding to the iconic '50s style diner aesthetic.

We used a special type of glass called hammered glass, which gives the surface a unique texture to catch more light. For the custom logo, we hand painted the tap dancing Coney Dog character with high fired ceramic paints on both sides of the glass. To achieve the authentic hot dog color we used a fused glass technique- sifting a mixture of powdered glass (or frit) over the white base glass.

Due to the size of these windows (five feet wide and three and a half feet high), we used steel reinforcement bars to keep the windows from bowing over time.

In 1973-74, founding artist, Richard E. Hanley apprenticed under the late Andrew R. Maglia of Maglia Studios in Detroit. Many of the ancient stained glass techniques that we use every day in our work were handed down by way of Mr. Maglia, over 50 years ago.

"Born in Sicily and a native of Catania, Andrew R. Maglia (1905 - 1974), designed and created the dome and the stained glass windows throughout the church [St. Matthew Catholic Church]. He began his craft in Italy at the age of 14. His work was based on an ancient European guild system. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1923 where he spent time in Massachusetts and New York apprenticing and learning the ancient techniques of his trade. He moved to Detroit and eventually founded Maglia Studios.

Although there are other works by Andrew Maglia in the Detroit area, he considered the mosaic mural at St. Matthew Catholic Church to be his most beautiful creation. Andrew Maglia remains one of the most renowned American stained glass artists of the 20th Century." Text from St. Matthew Catholic Church website: https://stmatthewdetroit.com/mosaic-dome

“Meadow Brook Hall, a 95-year-old museum, cultural center, and event and wedding venue on the campus of Oakland University, is a National Historic Landmark. The Tudor revival-style estate was once the home of Matilda Dodge Wilson, the widow of automotive pioneer John Dodge, and her second husband, Alfred Wilson. The 88,000-square-foot building has 110 rooms. Officials say it's the fourth-largest historic home in the country.”[1]
