The Hoosier Art Salon hosted a Pysanky Egg Workshop this morning in New Harmony by instructor Carol Powers!

Pysanky is a traditional Ukrainian art of decorating eggs using a wax-resist (batik) method, where symbols and patterns are written on the shell with bees wax using a special stylus (kistka) and candle, then layered with progressively darker dyes, and finally the wax is removed to reveal intricate, colorful designs. This painstaking, symbolic craft uses patterns representing wishes for fertility, prosperity, and protection, resulting in beautiful, non-edible keepsakes often kept for years.

Carol Powers learned the Ukrainian art of pysanky from her aunt when she was 12 years old. Her aunt learned pysanky from Carol’s grandmother, who brought the art with her when she and Carol’s grandfather immigrated to America. Carol says her grandmother would always have at least one egg in the house, which served as a protection from fire and storms. For Carol, teaching and passing on the art of pysanky to others is the most gratifying part of her work. She presently teaches the art in workshops for groups ranging from first-graders to people in their nineties.
