To the enduring memory of Nona Faustine , a Brooklyn native whose life and art were profoundly shaped by the power of images. From her early exposure to photography at age four, Nona developed a vision that connected the past with the present, revealing the hidden histories of slavery in New York City.
Her powerful series, “White Shoes,” stands as a testament to her commitment to honoring the contributions and sacrifices of those who built this city and country. Through her courageous self-portraits, often n**e in historically significant locations throughout NYC, Nona confronted societal discomfort and challenged us to acknowledge the enduring impact of slavery.
The white shoes, a potent symbol of inescapable white patriarchy, ground her work in a stark reality.
Inspired by artists like Carrie Mae Weems and Roy DeCarava, Nona Faustine’s artistic vision was sustained by a deep engagement with art history and a relentless pursuit of truth.
Her work remains a vital contribution to the ongoing dialogue about race, history, and identity. May her legacy continue to inspire and provoke, urging us to remember and reflect on the complexities of our shared past.
Please contribute to the The Nona Faustine Family Fund via GoFundMe with a gift in any amount to support her family, legacy and work - see link in bio.
There’s also an option to purchase a 16 x 20-inch print ($900) of this image through gallery, with 100% of the proceeds going to her family.

I was devastated to hear the news. Q and I were on our way, thinking we had more time. I will deeply miss you, cousin. You fearlessly placed your beautiful Black body in predominantly white spaces, reminding everyone of our history in this often racist and unforgiving country, especially the unique struggles faced by dark-skinned women. Thank you for bringing to light the planned erasure of spaces where enslaved bodies once lay in New York, revealing the important enslaved burial sites and our history hidden in plain sight beneath our feet. Few truly know the challenges you overcame to bring that project to life. Thank you for your bravery and, most importantly, for instilling that strength in your sister and daughter. The art world may not fully grasp what it has lost, but our family recognizes the incredible ancestor we have gained.

Rest well NONA FAUSTINE
