New Hope ARTS is proud to welcome Boy: Portrait of a Word by Philadelphia sculptor and PAFA instructor Kate Brockman into our Public ARTS Program.

This powerful work asks viewers to consider how a simple three-letter word can carry entirely different meanings depending on lived experience and history. To some, “boy” simply means a young male child. To many Black Americans, the word carries a painful history of racism, dehumanization, and the denial of full manhood under slavery and segregation.

Rather than depicting the horrific realities of slavery itself, Brockman’s sculpture seeks to restore humanity, dignity, and presence to the individual behind a word that carries generations of pain and damage ---> a history that too many people still attempt to minimize, deny, or erase.

Not all Public Art is meant to simply decorate spaces. At its best, it asks us to pause, reflect, question, and engage in dialogue. Some works comfort us. Others ask us to sit with difficult histories that continue to shape the present.

We are honored to provide a home for this important sculpture and grateful to the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church (who own that cemetary) for embracing the opportunity to share it with the community.

Boy: Portrait of a Word is now on view as part of the New Hope ARTS Public ARTS Program for at least one year. (It can be seen on the way up to the municipal complex from the driveway off of Mechanic Street.) -Signage coming SOON!

A meaningful conversation through art, language, and history.

Join us on Sunday, May 24 for a special FREE artist talk with Philadelphia sculptor Kate Brockman beside her newly installed sculpture, Boy: Portrait of a Word, now part of the New Hope ARTS Public ARTS Program.

The work thoughtfully examines the layered history and meaning behind the word “boy,” particularly its historical use toward enslaved African American men, while honoring the humanity and dignity of those subjected to it. This promises to be a powerful and thought-provoking discussion about language, memory, public art, and the role sculpture can play in shared community spaces.

The morning will also include an optional walking tour of the Public ARTS Program led by Joanne Reszka.

🗓 Sunday, May 24
🚶 10:30 AM – Walking Tour
🗣 12:00 PM – Artist Talk with Kate Brockman
📍 Methodist Cemetery off Mechanic Street near the Municipal Complex, New Hope, PA

A couple weeks later and we’re STILL thinking about the incredible Opening Reception for Naked in New Hope, the Sidetracks Gallery legacy.

The energy, the conversations, the vulnerability, the humor, the courage, the community - it was a reminder of exactly why this exhibition matters and why New Hope has always been a place that embraces freedom of expression and individuality.

Huge thank you to the artists, volunteers, collaborators, and everyone who came out to celebrate with us. And special thanks to our Ledge performers, model JaQuinley Kerr and featured artist Jennifer Finch, for their captivating live pose-and-draw performance during the reception.

We are officially halfway through the exhibition, with only a few weekends left to experience it in person - so if you haven’t made it in yet, now is the time!

FREE and open to the public: Friday - Sunday 12-5pm through June 7. (Keep a lookout for info on our second annual Risqué Cabaret coming June 6!)
