Monday is one of the tougher days of the week for me.
We normally package our rice and seasonings from Tuesday on through the rest of the week.
Monday's are the day I get everything ready for the rest of the week's production.
So today we will make up and label the cases of the products we will be manufacturing and packaging this week.
In addition we will be receiving a spice delivery, case delivery and shipping a few orders that were not picked up last week.
Then, as the day draws to a close we will make a batch of seasonings so we will be ready to go first thing Tuesday,.
May not sound like much but it will keep us busy, for sure.
Being prepared for the weeks activities is super important if we are going to make long, efficient production runs.
Actual, if you think about it, it is sort of like life in general.
If you don't get yourself prepared, ie, educated or trained in a profession or craft, if you don't put in the prep work for success you are facing a pretty long life that maybe harder than it need be.
The decisions we make in life will set the stage for our future success, or not.
We all know folks who make, not such good decisions in life. It seems like some folks just continue down the path of making poor decisions than rationalize those poor decisions. If you are being honest with yourself you know when you go off in the wrong direction. It is up to you to see the problem and correct the course. If you go around blaming others, ( and we all do this to some extent), you are doomed to not full filling your potential.
So, knowing this I am trying our best not to go down the path of self pity but go down the path of self-awareness, correcting our heading and working to stay on course. I think 114 years of continuous operation for Conrad Rice Mill's operation indicates our plan is viable and worth pursuing.
I Made a bunch more Cuban sandwiches this past Friday and put them in our KONRIKO Co Store freezer. Sold quite a few of them so will we will make another dozen or so this week. Will let you know when that will take place as some folks like to come get them hot off the panini machine.
Tours are ongoing from Monday - Saturday, 9am to 5pm in the KONRIKO Co Store, stop in and take the tour, it is really well done, educational and entertaining.
Come hungry as we will have some great KONRIKO products made for you to taste test.
Hope to see you soon !!

First things first....several of you inquired on what happened to the wet, frightened Kitten from yesterday morning, that got seperated from its' litter ?
She is fine. The family of kittens and their mom, Whiny Cat, have reunited and are, at this moment, having a lovely communal meal of stinky cat food. They are pretty cute.
Yesterday was a day of my waiting for trucks to show up to pickup orders that were ready to be picked up. Only 1/2 of the trucks showed up and my frustration is growing.
What I am seeing, more and more of , is a terrible lack of communication within certain Companies that have grown a little too big for their collective britches.
We had a truck driver here on Wednesday trying to call his dispatcher to talk about the large number of pallets we had for him to pickup. His Company had been told days ahead how many pallets there were, but no one bothered to tell the driver. To make matters worse no one at his Company answered his phone call.
Ever since I was in College, back in the dark ages, communication and communication problems have been a strongly discussed topic.
Even with all the new ways to communicate, text, emails, cell phones, carrier pigeons, we still are not communicating effectively.
When I ask myself "why?" I don't have a really good answer. Laziness, "not my job", indifference, feeling insulted from responsibility by the size of the Company? I think it is, most likely, a combination of all of the above and several more reasons could be added to the list. This is not good, not good at all!!
I will try to do my part to communicate better, but I also realize, when communicating with someone else, the filter they hear me or that I think is correct, may not be at all. Age old problem, but I don't have to like it and will strive to work on better understanding and communication here at our old rice mill.
Speaking of communication, ( the word of the day), we are making more Cuban sandwiches today around 11am for our KONRIKO Co Store freezer. If you want a hot of the panini machine Cuban sandwich come by around noon cause by 2pm they will go into the freezer. Pricing for our Cuban sandwiches is only $5 and $3 for a BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich.....our sandwiches have to be the best deal in town, or the Parish, or the state of Louisiana....ok I'm getting carried away. Come and get one, they really are a good deal for a very good sandwich.
The KONRIKO Co Store is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday -Saturday,( located at 309 Ann St in New Iberia, LA), for your Sandwich shopping pleasure. Check out our other KONRIKO brand products. We have several prepared for you to sample and do your own personal taste test.
Don't forget we are offering tours of our historic old rice mill, too. A very well done, professional tour that has something of interest for all ages.
Come pay us a visit.

As you would imagine I had a few things going on in my mind this morning, when I got to work.
I have two orders to load out on trucks, a Chef to meet and greet sometime today, payroll, etc.
All of that went straight out the window when I was about to unlock the front door the old Rice Mill this morning.
I thought I heard a frantic sounding" animal like cry", but a train was going by so I wasn't sure of what I had heard or thought I had heard.
I waited for the train to get on by and yes, there it was again, a frantic cry, coming from a very small kitten.
The kitten was under the Mill and must have gotten separated from her mother, Whiny Cat.
Whiny Cat is our local Mill cat who drops a litter about twice a year.
She is a pretty good mother but I suspect the bad weather we had earlier this morning had gotten her separated from the kitten in distress.
What to do? The kittens are feral and will not come to you as they are afraid of humans, dogs, you name it.
I got as close as I could to the terrified kitten and called out to it. Much to my surprise it came toward me, not too close, but much closer than ever before.
I went and got a cup of cat food that we keep around and brought it out to the scared little kitten. She, ( I guess it is a female?), ran from me than came back toward me.
I poured the cup of cat food on the ground and she dove into it. She was starving.
The crying stopped and I hope her Mother will come fine her and reunite the litter, I hope.
Made for an interesting early morning.
I am not a big cat person, much prefer Dogs, but baby cats, kittens, are cute and cuddly and need protection.
I think the rest of my day will be a good one.
For those of you who enjoy our Cuban and BBQ Pulled Pork sandwiches I have a good inventory in the KONRIKO Co Store freezer. Will add some more tomorrow, too. The Cubans sell for only $5 and the BBQ Pulled Pork are only $3. These are not little sandwiches, but a meal unto themselves. Come try one and be sure to sample our Bay Island Secret Sauce, on some of our KONRIKO rice, when you pickup your sandwiches. Really a treat, IMHO.
We are located at 309 Ann St here in New Iberia, LA. and are open Monday-Saturday from 9am to 5pm.
Look forward to seeing you soon.

We have been busting our tail ends the past few days but there is light at the end of the tunnel, and we don't think it is a freight train.
Got our biggest single order done yesterday and it should be picked up today along with 3 other orders we have completed, too.
When you look at the number of cases we needed to make you just shake your head and start.
The crew we have is nothing short of miracle workers. The part I like the best about this crew is, the whole time we are working on an order they are discussing ways to do it better the next time we get such an order. They also will let me know when we are running short on an ingredient or some supply, which is very helpful in keeping the operation going smoothly. No one person can wrap their head around every detail, it truly takes a team to make this place work, and it does !
Will wrap up the various pallets of seasonings this morning, label them and get them staged for the trucks that will pick them up today and tomorrow.
One of the fun things about this small operation is how diverse it is.
While we will be loading several 18 wheeler trucks the next few days we also are working on some smaller, custom orders for some pretty great restaurants and individual chefs.
We even have a Chef and her Husband stopping in tomorrow on their way from Las Vegas to Atlanta, GA to pickup an order of custom blended seasonings. This is the Chef's second trip to our Operation but the first for her Husband, we look forward to meeting him.
I just put a pork roast in the oven and will be making more Cuban Sandwiches, most likely this Friday, for our KONRIKO Co Store freezer. We do have a good supply of our sandwiches right now, so come by anytime between 9am to 5pm Monday-Saturday.
If you have time please take a tour of the old rice mill and taste test our many KONRIKO brand Products we have prepared for you.
Try our KONRIKO Bay Island Secret sauce and our Gravy and Sauce Thickener, they are both one of a kind items that taste great.
Remember, all of our items are MSG Free, Gluten Free, NON GMO and made from only natural ingredients. You can trust the KONRIKO brand to be simply but expertly made by the Company that has been milling rice and blending seasonings for over 114 years.
Look forward to meeting you on your next visit.

Have you ever heard of the word "hydroscopic" ?
I had not until we ventured into making more KONRIKO Spice Blends.
Hydroscopic items or products are items that absorb or accept moisture very readily. Items like garlic powder, onion powder and other ingredients will accept enough moisture until they will lump and clump up and not flow freely.
I am giving one of our secrets away by telling this, but it surprised us and now, in retrospect I find it kind of amusing.
The first KONRIKO spice blend we decided to make was our KONRIKO Creole Seasoning, which is also one of our most popular and best selling seasonings.
I had developed what I thought was a good formula for the product and we set about making it.
Little did I know, at the time, the garlic I needed to add to the formula was not garlic powder.
We made a about 100 cases of the new product and in 48 hours the final product turned to concrete. Got hard as a rock !
Took me a little while to figure out I should have used granulated garlic not garlic powder. Granulated garlic is hydroscopic, to some degree, but is easily managed where as garlic powder is not a product to add to a blend that will not be used within hours of blending it.
Lesson learned....the hard way. I promise I now know the definition of 'hydroscopic".
Much of what we know here at America's Oldest Operating Rice Mill has been learned through trial and error or another way to say through the school of hard knocks. Experience matters and that is why, after 114 years of operation, we think we have gotten a lot more things right than wrong. Oh, we know we have room to improve. We are never satisfied with our Operation as we are always tweaking it as we go along.
Come visit us at our KONRIKO Co Store located at 309 Ann St here in New Iberia and let us show you some of our "tricks of the trade" and clever ways we have learned how to make quality, non gmo, gluten free products that never use MSG, period.
The proof is in the pudding, they say. Come try our many KONRIKO brand product we have made for you and you can be the judge. We love your feedback, so let us know what you think.
Hope to see you soon !!

What a rainy weekend we just had. But, we needed the rain, no doubt.
I made Cuban and BBQ pulled pork sandwiches most of this past Saturday, so we do have some stock in our KONRIKO Co Store freezer, waiting for you.
We are still working on a large KONRIKO Seasoning order, at least large for us, today and tomorrow.
Since most of our production line is still done by hand it takes a bit of time to blend our seasonings, then put the seasoning in a can, seam it closed, case it, palletize it and shrink wrap it.
So, we will be at it again today and tomorrow I suspect.
On the sandwich front I will cook another pork roast this week and try to add some more sandwiches to our current stock.
We also got some KONRIKO Long Grain and Medium Grain rice packed and will be putting that out on our KONRIKO Co Store shelves later today.
Still waiting on our next order of Wild Pecan rice to come in from our farmer. Hope to get it in and packaged asap.
Had a large group of Amish visit us last week. They have been visiting us for the past 20 years, each Spring.
It is really interesting to learn about the Amish lifestyle and how they still farm with horses and wagons. Seems like, looking in from the outside, like it maybe a hard life. IF it is you couldn't tell it from our annual Visitors. They are some of nicest and happiest Visitors we get visiting us.
We are open to give tours today, Memorial Day at our old rice mill located at 309 Ann St here in New Iberia. Come visit us and take our tour and enjoy our many KONRIKO brand products we have prepared for you to taste test.
Hope to see you soon !!

OMG !!! I have been trying to get on facebook for two days now. Two days of "are you a robot?". I go through the clicking of "not a robot" then try to reboot and it goes right back to "are you a robot"
Finally I gave up and ask our in house IT person, Lanie, to come fix it. In about 10 minutes she did.
I don't like, but do respect, the new computer, digital world we live in.
Texting is about the only way I can communicate with our Grandkids and now most of our employees.
We just got internet and wifi connected to our home. It took me all of one day of unfamiliar buttons on a new remote control thingy to make the whole TV shut down....had to call our Son to come safe me and fix it. Thank GOD for younger folks who are savvy with the new technology.
My unbelievable packing crew came in yesterday and cleaned up and repaired the white rice packing machinery and elevator. I told them the front end of the Mill had not looked this organized since 1912 !
They ran a few hundred bags of KONRIKO medium and Long grain rice that we sell in the store, this morning.
The seasoning cans for our new giant order showed up this morning so they jumped from White rice to making 576 cases of 6/5oz Greek Seasoning. On Monday we will do a like number of cases of 6/6oz Creole Seasoning, all going to HEB in Texas.
After that we will go to making several 1000 case orders of our small, baby Greek seasoning.
We are not sure why our seasoning orders have bumped up but i suspect it has to do with our loyal consumers, most of whom, follow us on facebook.
Whatever the reason we are not complaining, THANK YOU.
I keep running our of Cuban and BBQ Pulled Pork sandwiches in our KONRIKO Co Store Freezer.
I spent all morning making more sandwiches and will cook them tomorrow morning in the store and when they cool down I'll put them in the freezer. If you want a hot and fresh sandwich come by the KONRIKO Co Store tomorrow, Saturday around 10am to 11am, I should have some ready.
Let me go, got to go help make some Greek Seasoning, which is a great seasoning, NON GMO, Gluten Free and of course, MSG free, too.
Hope to see you over the weekend at the store located at 309 Ann St here in New Iberia, LA.

Tomorrow will be a first for us, here at America's Oldest Operating Rice Mill.
We will be operating a few machines that I have not run before. The employee who ran these machines has stepped aside due to health issues.
While we have the basics down there will be a learning curve, no doubt.
I am not a machinery person, my area of interest is the selling side of the business, that and the planning and acquisition of the supply chain side of the business. So, I am nervous about running these machines.
I spoke to one of our very gifted production folks who has never met a machine he cannot figure out, who tells me to chill out, we will get it figured out and going in the right direction. I know he is right but until I see them running I will be holding my breath.
On top of this we will start working on our biggest order yet, on Friday, if all the ingredients, cans, cases arrive as planned.
On top of all of the above we are seeing price increases coming at us from all sides.
Yesterday our shipping case supplier informed us of a price increase, with no notice. It must be nice to be able to just increase your selling price at the snap of a finger.
We can't do this as our grocery store customers need up to a 90 day notification of a price increase. That sort of sucks, but that is the way it is done if you sell food products to the national grocery store chains. We will just suck it up and plow forward. After all the years we have been making KONRIKO Rice and Spice products we have about seen it all. And, like all things, this too will pass.
School is just about over here in Iberia Parish so we are looking for an influx of families traveling with their kids to come visit us over the next 30 to 45 days.
Our tours are conducted Monday - Saturday from 9am to 5pm, year round.
If you can come see our Operation, plan approx 40 minutes for our tour and anther 20 to 25 minutes to browse our KONRIKO Co Store and taste test all the KONRIKO brand products we have prepared for you. Come hungry !
For you folks looking for our Cuban and BBQ Pulled Pork sandwiches, plan on finding a good inventory in our store freezer this Saturday around noon. I will be cooking sandwiches all Saturday morning.
We hope to see you soon here in the beautiful City on the Bayou Teche...New Iberia, LA.
We are located at 309 Ann St in New Iberia, LA.

Here at America's Oldest Operating Rice Mill I spend most of my time surrounded by machinery, rusty tin buildings, spices, seasoning cans, and burlap bags full of rice.
While all of this has become my life's work, that I still enjoy, the daily scene becomes slightly myopic.
Driving home from work yesterday I slowed down my old pickup truck and just took in the scenic drive through the heart of New Iberia, LA.
New Iberia is an old town, not too big, full of colorful characters, architecture right out of the old deep south and beautiful trees and flowers in full bloom.
If I were to describe New Iberia in one word it would be "Green". Every where you look are manicured green lawns, live oak trees full of their new crop of vibrant green leaves, flower beds overflowing with vibrant blossoms and green foliage.
I really enjoyed by slow drive home. New Iberia is beautiful right now. I would like to invite you to come share in this Spring/Summer beauty of our home town.
While you are here stop in and visit us at our historic old rice mill.
We have a very professionally conducted tour of the Operation that takes about 40 minutes to do. When you leave we guarantee you will know more about Rice and the Cajun Culture and where to go to eat for a great gumbo or rice dressing dish. Hopefully, when you finish the tour you will take home one or two KONRIKO brand products to help you remember us and to always have the wonderful taste of New Iberia with you at all times.
Hope to see you soon in our store, where the tour begins, at 309 Ann St, New Iberia, LA. , Monday thru Saturday from 9am to 5pm.

It seems to me a lot of my posts are concerning animals. Today is no different.
Our home is on piers, which means it is not set on a concrete slab, but off the ground about 18 inches. This is pretty typical for our area and for homes like ours, that are at least 100 years old.
As mentioned earlier we have several feral cats that have taken a liking to our home and us.
We swore we would not feed any of them when we first moved in and noticed the "neighborhood" stray cats.
That didn't last too long. I blame my Wife for first feeding them but, truth be known, I was the guilty party.
One of the feral cats has black and white markings so we very creatively call her "black and white", cleaver folks we are.
Black and White has been a naughty girl and got herself in the "family way". She meets us each night as we come home with hunger in her eyes and an expanding stomach.
She will not let us touch her but will sit at the back door and look inside the house with a pathetic, hungry look on her little face.
She recently had her kittens which she had under our house.
Over the weekend I saw them for the first time, all 6 of them. Super cut as most baby animals are.
They were moving about and Saturday evening we looked out the window to witness Black and White with her kittens trooping along behind her. She moved them somewhere else, which is ok by me. Where ever she moved them she was back Sunday evening looking for food.
The kittens were really cute but I hope they find another home in the area to hang out with, we really don't need anymore mouths to feed or worry over.
Here at the old rice mill we have a litter of kittens, 4 of them, which are running all over the place. No shortage of felines in our lives, both at home and work.
Our inventory of Cuban and BBQ Pulled Pork sandwiches is very low so I will double up this week and cook two pork roasts and prepare a double amount of sandwiches, most likely this coming Saturday. Stay tuned and I will let you know more details mid week.
Still getting lots of Visitors here at the KONRIKO Store and Rice Mill. We give a great tour, takes approx 40 minutes, of our Operation. Very interesting tour followed by lots of KONRIKO brand products for you to try.
Come see us at 309 Ann St here in New Iberia, LA. Tours are from 9am to 5pm Monday-Saturday, year round.
Hope to see you soon here at America's Oldest Operating Rice Mill.
