When worlds collide ⚾🇺🇸

to last summer when Rear Adm. Jonathan Hickey, Commander, U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes District, had the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at a Cleveland Guardians game at Progressive Field.

The Coast Guard showcased an incredible SAR (Search and Rescue) demonstration right off City Pier next to the National Coast Guard Museum construction site in New London, CT, last week.

Watching the Jayhawk helicopter hover above the Thames River as the rescue swimmer was lowered into the water was a powerful reminder of the courage, precision, and dedication behind every lifesaving mission. 🚁🌊

Moments like these are exactly what the National Coast Guard Museum will preserve and share for future generations to experience and remember.

Given the mission of “Expert Mouser,” a cat named Herman was officially commissioned into the Coast Guard and assigned a very specific duty in 1943: hunting down and controlling the rodent population aboard active vessels.

Herman wasn’t just a guest on board - he was enlisted. Tasked with keeping ships free of rodents that could damage supplies and disrupt life at sea, he earned his place as a working member of the crew through sheer instinct and consistency.

Herman even received an official identification card issued in his hometown of Baltimore, marking him as an official member of the service.

As we recognize Military Appreciation Month this May, we want to take a moment to honor all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces - the United States Army, United States Marine Corps, United States Navy, United States Air Force, United States Space Force, and the United States Coast Guard - along with all active-duty service members, veterans, military spouses, and families. Their sacrifice, strength, and dedication make our nation safer every day, and their service never goes unnoticed.

And as we honor all who serve, we are especially proud to highlight the enduring legacy of the U.S. Coast Guard.

The National Coast Guard Museum is currently under construction in New London, Connecticut. The Museum’s purpose is to honor the legacy of the U.S. Coast Guard and the people who have made immeasurable contributions to our nation’s safety, security, and maritime heritage.
