Last night at Expressiones, we had the pleasure of welcoming artist Douglas Rice, who shared a compelling reflection on his recent residency in Mexico, generously hosted by Casa Murciélagos and CSArts.
Rice guided us through a deeply introspective journey—one shaped by place, material, and encounter. His experience unfolded as a dialogue between landscape and memory, where the textures of Mexico informed both process and perception. Through his words and images, we witnessed how residency becomes more than production—it becomes transformation, a site of exchange where cultural boundaries dissolve and new visual languages emerge.
His practice, rooted in attentive observation, revealed the subtle interplay between the intimate and the collective. The residency served not only as a studio but as a living archive—one that holds gestures, conversations, and the quiet imprints of time.
We thank Douglas Rice for his generosity and insight, and extend our gratitude to Casa Murciélagos and CSArts for fostering such meaningful artistic exchange.

Last night we had the joy of celebrating the opening of “Fullness: Thresholds of the Invisible Weave” by Fernanda Rojas at Expressiones. The evening was filled with warmth, curiosity, and deep connection as visitors moved through her work, engaging with its textures, emotions, and quiet layers of meaning.
The public response was truly moving—many guests lingered in front of the pieces, reflecting, sharing impressions, and expressing how deeply her art resonated with them. It was inspiring to witness such genuine dialogue between the artist and the community.
A beautiful night that reminds us of the power of art to reveal the invisible and bring people together

ArtVenture is Expressiones’ flagship program providing culturally relevant, bilingual arts education to children in New London Public Schools and after‑school sessions. The program bridges cultural gaps by inviting Latin American artists‑in‑residence to work closely with youth and introduce them to diverse artistic traditions. It focuses on increasing cultural competency and awareness among low‑income families while introducing non‑Latino audiences to the richness of Latin American arts and culture.

This spring our current artist‑in‑residence, Fernanda Rojas, is guiding students through an ArtVenture project that explores Mapuche symbolism and the Chinese I Ching. Using color, pattern and form, children learn how symbols carry history, balance and meaning across cultures. Participants first color compositions combining Mapuche‑inspired symbols with I Ching structures, observing geometry, repetition and rhythm. They then create personal clay totems that reflect their own stories and imagination. This project fosters cultural awareness, visual thinking and confidence, and highlights Fernanda’s mission to connect the seen and unseen through art.

An evening filled with creativity, wonder, and connection.
Our gallery came alive with the voices and visions of artists who remind us that the present is full of possibility.
From the walls to the smiles in the room, every moment reflected pride, imagination, and the joy of being seen.
Especially powerful was witnessing our young artists standing beside their work—confident, inspired, and celebrated.
This is more than an exhibition.
It’s a glimpse into who we are, and who we are becoming.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this opening night so meaningful.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our wonderful Expressiones partners, the Salvation Army Red Shield Youth Center in New London and the Drop-In Community Learning & Resource Center—for their invaluable collaboration and dedication to the youth of our community, helping make this exhibition possible.
