Gustave Caillebotte completed roughly 450 paintings in his lifetime. The majority sit in museums and major private collections.

"Falaise en Normandie," painted circa 1880, belongs to the series he produced during his summers along the Normandy coast, where he looked for inspiration beyond the streets of Paris. Thick, layered strokes build the cliff face while a swirl of rock in the foreground exaggerates its height.

Caillebotte also assembled nearly 70 works by Monet, Renoir, Degas and others, bequeathing them to the French state. That gift became a founding pillar of the Musée d'Orsay.

Hooked by heritage and hidden ambition, this early Gauguin still life captures the artist at a crossroads. Painted in 1875 while Gauguin balanced a career in finance with a growing devotion to painting, the work predates his Paris Salon debut by a single year. A lidded tureen, pitcher and loose fruit emerge from a shadowed tabletop in bold greens and warm earth tones, revealing the vigorous brushwork that would define his mature Post-Impressionist vision.

With an estimated 125 Gauguin paintings remaining in private hands, works of this caliber rarely appear on the market. Comparable still lifes hang in the Musée d’Orsay and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Marie Egner captured lilacs at their most fleeting moment of bloom. This still life demonstrates the Austrian artist’s characteristically lively brushwork, pairing cool violet tones with golden browns and mossy greens for a richly harmonious composition. Egner trained under Emil Jakob Schindler and stands today among Austria’s most significant women painters, with works held in the Belvedere and the Museum Niederösterreich. She founded a private painting school for women, advancing artistic education at a time when few women held such standing. Le Sidaner worked from memory rather than direct observation.

That method gave "La table sur la terrasse au clair de lune, Villefranche-sur-Mer" its dreamlike hold. Completed in 1927, the work sets a table on a terrace above a quiet vista, chairs pulled back in silent invitation. A leading figure of Intimism, Le Sidaner rendered the essence of a place rather than a fleeting moment before it.

Rotterdam’s harbor rendered in dazzling turquoise and violet by one of Neo-Impressionism’s key figures. Maximilien Luce painted this luminous port scene in 1907, the same year Paul Signac unveiled his own monumental Rotterdam harbor view at the Salon des Indépendants, sparking renewed interest in the subject among the avant-garde. Luce spent his career finding beauty in modern industry, and here, smoke rising from a steamship’s hull becomes a study in lavender and gray light. His work hangs today in the Musée d’Orsay and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

A single phrase could mean the difference between a submarine's survival and its stranding — the "parent ship."

During World War II, submarines could not carry the fuel, food or spare parts needed for extended patrols. Depot ships, known as parent ships, met this need, serving as floating bases where crews rested, resupplied and repaired their vessels between missions. Montague Dawson, one of the twentieth century's foremost marine painters, captured this exchange in Submarine with Supply Ships, a rare grisaille composition painted circa 1940 for reproduction in the wartime illustrated press. The work appeared in The Sphere on November 16, 1940, under the title A Submarine Comes Home.

In the summer of 1905, Henri Matisse painted just fifteen canvases in the fishing village of Collioure — and set modern art on a new course.

Un beau matin d'été dates to that pivotal season on the French Riviera, where Matisse and André Derain pushed color and brushwork to daring new heights. Months later, critic Louis Vauxcelles saw the results at the Salon d'Automne and called the works "les fauves," or wild beasts. Matisse and his circle took up the name as a badge of honor.

Nearly all fifteen Collioure canvases now reside in institutions including MoMA, the Met and SFMOMA.
