Marianne Desmarais opens “gather” this evening at the gallery. Please stop by (with appropriate ppe) for a superb, socially distanced art experience.

“In gather, air-filled packing materials and plastic containers are the starting point for an examination of the logics and breakdown of material culture. Familiar and ubiquitous, these discards have pillowed the objects of our desire in protective isolation and then are expected to simply disappear. Designed for specific function and single use, these anti-forms are proliferating.

Using a synthetic rubber coating I am sequestering plastic detritus and translating its forms and properties. Working with a material that changes state, from viscous liquid to flexible solid, produces a fluidity in the work that yields expansive surface and open forms that alter relationships to gravity, time, and perception.”

The systemic and sanctioned oppression of black people in the United States demands a focused reordering and revision/re-vision of its laws, affairs, and practices. This moment in the city of New Orleans and the country at large necessitates a break from the norm and an alteration of plans. Staple Goods opens the space as a connection point, leaving walls blank and ready to lament, listen, and strategize new directions. During our gallery hours, the public is invited to bring offerings of all sorts to leave in the space for the duration of the month. These offerings could consist of necessary information sharing, calls to action, essential services, signs, artwork, or texts that would benefit other visitors and promote conversation, exchange, and response to a collective revision of current systems.
