Have you visited "In the Beloved: A New Body of Work by Alexis McGrigg" at Ogden Museum yet?

Influenced by dance, film, literature and spiritual philosophy, the exhibition merges fluid abstraction with an exploration of Blackness as both a physical and metaphysical space. McGrigg creates a realm she calls "The Beloved," a space where time collapses and expands and alternate realities of the soul emerge.

Artist Alexis McGrigg shares:

“In my current body of work, I am using the picture plane as a window into this alternate space that the viewer can watch the cycles of being. We are able to see alternate worlds through space and time while also seeing our own interior world. It is a kind of deep knowing.

The parallel realities within the picture plane are at once the same location, varied and yet the same. I see them as alternate timelines collapsing on each other and expanding over and over in cycles.”

"In the Beloved: A New Body of Work by Alexis McGrigg" is on view through July 19.

For nearly a decade, Herman Leonard immersed himself in the smoky jazz clubs of New York City, photographing the musicians who were revolutionizing American music. Unable to afford regular visits to the clubs, Leonard traded his photographs for access. Reviving a practice from his teenage years, he gave prints to musicians and club owners, who soon began using his images for promotional flyers and marquees.

For Leonard, photography became a way to connect with the musicians whose passion and creativity he deeply admired. Through his lens, he captured the atmosphere of the jazz clubs and the artists who transformed the sound and culture of music.

Discover more in "Herman Leonard: Images of Jazz," presented by The Helis Foundation, at Ogden Museum of Southern Art through July 12.
