Check out those bellies on our honeypot ants! 🐜 🍯

Honeypot ants have an incredible survival strategy. Certain worker ants, called repletes, store liquid food inside their swollen abdomens until they look like living golden grapes. When food becomes scarce, the other ants tap their antennae, and the repletes share the stored nectar to help feed the entire colony.

Strange-looking but amazing, these living “pantries” help their colony survive harsh desert conditions!

Heads up y'all! Audubon Insectarium and Audubon Aquarium will be closed on Tuesday, May 19 to allow our teams to make emergency preparations before the start of hurricane season.

Unlike the preparations you may make at your home, these preparations involve shutting down multiple systems, testing back-up electrical generators, and monitoring water, air, and life support systems to ensure they will be operational in case of an emergency.

The Aquarium and Insectarium will reopen on Wednesday, May 20, at 10:00 a.m.
