Diboll Design Center Mission Statement

The Collins C. Diboll Art Gallery & Loyola Art Department are located on the main campus of Loyola University New Orleans.

The Diboll Gallery is on 4th floor of the J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library, and the Art Department is located in Monroe Hall. The Diboll Art Gallery & Loyola Art Depatment are dedicated to reinforcing Loyola's mission by serving as an educational exhibit space, offering lectures and workshops to the Loyola community and general public. All exhibitions support the programming and aesthetics of

the Loyola Art Department. Exhibitions include local, national, international, and senior student shows. 3 non-student exhibitions are held in the Fall and Spring semesters, with the months of April & May reserved for GD, BFA, and BA senior exit exhibitions. As often as possible, tours, lectures and workshops are held in conjunction with these exhibitions. In addition to artist and senior exhibitions in the Diboll Gallery, we use this page to update the public on all alumni & current student exhibitions, lectures, and events related to the Art department.

*Students, faculty, and staff on campus may visit the exhibition when the Monroe Library is open. Please check the loyno.edu website for days & hours of operation.

Hope you can join us for this wonderful event! 5-6pm in the Diboll Design Center Gallery!

Harold Baquet and Cheron Brylski first met at a press conference in front of City Hall in 1980. It was the first press conference she had attended for her new boss, Mayor Dutch Morial. Harold was a photographer for a local weekly newspaper. She doesn't remember the meeting, but Harold would tell her he did. Over the next six years, they often worked together but the relationship was hardly a close one in Cheron's eyes. While Harold was a favorite among the staff for his work ethic, there were lots of reporters in those days and lots of office favorites. Harold would eventually be hired by Dutch Morial to be his personal photographer. It wasn't until Dutch left office, and the Morial staff continued to meet, that a professional friendship between the two grew into something more. It took 15 years from that first meeting in 1980 for Cheron to say 'yes' to marrying Harold, but to this day, she says it is the one thing she accomplished in life that was absolutely perfect.

Reception Tonight! 5-7 pm

The Department of Design in the College of Music and Media invite you to our opening reception for A Tribute to Harold Baquet, Picturing Blackness, in the Diboll Gallery tonight, from 5 to 7 pm.

Our curator, L. Kasimu Harris, brought together Harold Baquet’s professional and personal photography with work from photographers in our New Orleans community to create a beautiful and thoughtful exhibition.

"This exhibition proceeds in the spirit of intergenerational relationships, pairing ten photographers whose work pushes visual boundaries and creates dialogue with Baquet’s depictions of New Orleans. The curation was driven by seeing what was never seen before, and seeing what we have seen–differently."
- L. Kasimu Harris
