Louis Cathedral, it forms the campus of the Catholic Cultural Center of New Orleans. The Old Ursuline Convent was completed in 1752, replacing an earlier structure completed in 1734, and is the oldest building in the Mississippi River Valley. The Ursuline nuns lived on this site from not long after their arrival in New Orleans in 1727 until 1824. Here they operated a convent, orphanage, and school

for girls. This historic building is now home to a brilliant museum with both permanent and changing exhibits.

Due to a water shutoff in our area as a result of infrastructure improvement work, our museum will be closed today, April 8. With a planned resumption of regular service this afternoon, we plan to be open as usual tomorrow (Thursday, April 9). Let's hope Easter and spring mean a new start for our French Quarter infrastructure!

There is something almost sacred about an early morning in the French Quarter -- the crowds have gone home, the streets are quiet, the light is just perfect, the air is not too heavy yet.

During Lent, you can experience that beautiful stillness in a TRULY sacred way at 7:30 a.m. Mass every Friday at St. Mary’s Church, 1116 Chartres St., attached to the Old Ursuline Convent Museum, New Orleans.

Because the church no longer holds regular services, these special Lenten Masses are a rare chance to worship in one of the Quarter’s most historic spaces.
We invite you to start your Friday in the quiet of the Quarter tomorrow and every Friday through March 27.

The Catholic Cultural Center of New Orleans is excited to host a special lecture featuring Christophe Besnier, the research director of Institut National de Recherches Archéologiques, France’s public body for preventive archaeology, who served as lead archaeologist of the Notre-Dame Cathedral excavations conducted following the devastating 2019 fire.

The lecture, which is part of the Janice Foulks Catholic Culture Series and presented in partnership with the Alliance Française of New Orleans, the French General Consulate in Louisiana, and Villa Albertine in New Orleans, will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 27, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, located within the Old Ursuline Convent Museum, New Orleans, 1112 Chartres St. It is free and open to the public.

Besnier will present groundbreaking findings from the unprecedented archaeological investigations carried out beneath Notre-Dame Cathedral during its restoration. These excavations revealed significant insights into the cathedral’s construction, liturgical life, and medieval history.

“Notre-Dame holds a special place in the hearts of Catholics everywhere,” said Dr. Chris Wiseman, executive director of the Catholic Cultural Center of New Orleans. “To welcome Mr. Besnier, whose work has revealed new insights on one of the most iconic sacred spaces in the world, is a true honor. As we prepare for the restoration of our own St. Louis Cathedral, this discussion continues and enriches a journey shared by New Orleans and Paris.”

On Friday at the Museum, we were so proud to host relatives of Mother Henriette DeLille, some of whom are also related to Pope Leo XIV, owing to the Pope's maternal grandparents' deep roots in New Orleans. Here, Sister Sylvia Thibodeaux of the Sisters of the Holy Family shares a story with our visitors. You can also read about the Pope's relatives’ time in New Orleans in the Sunday Times-Picayune or on nola.com. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/17bStahinU/
