Artists' Workshop NSB

Artists' Workshop NSB Since 1958, Artists’ Workshop has provided premier art education on Canal Street. Our studios serve all levels to learn, create, and exhibit.

Join us to experiment and build friendships in a supportive environment. 🎨✨

🌐www.artistsworkshopinc.com In February of 1957, fifteen creative souls responded to a notice in the local paper inviting anyone interested in forming an art group to come together for lunch at a local Italian restaurant. Before the meal was over, the idea of establishing a local art league had grown from just a hope to a

full-fledged commitment to really make it happen. Together they formed New Smyrna’s first chartered art group in March 1958. The enterprising little group approached the City Fathers and urged them to find available space. An upstairs room at 126 Canal Street, above the Parks and Recreation Department, was offered and readily accepted. The space was voluntarily renovated by the group in exchange for its use, and the Artists’ Workshop had its first home. Three months after forming, the group had grown to 51 members who decided to put on their first show and public exhibit. The Bank of New Smyrna permitted their walls to become the gallery to hang 43 oils and sketches. The public was invited and 300 guests showed up! The first-ever art show in New Smyrna Beach had been received with great enthusiasm, and the Annual Membership Exhibition has continued to this day. By 1978, with over 200 members and growing, the group had outgrown the Parks & Recreation room and again approached the City Council to request the large room above the Chamber of Commerce at 115 Canal Street. In 1980, the Gallery downstairs adjacent to the offices of the Chamber, was opened and exists in the same space today. In 2008, the Artists’ Workshop and the Marine Discovery Center pursued with the Wildlife Foundation of Florida (WFF) and the City of New Smyrna Beach, an ECHO Grant to renovate the old New Smyrna Beach High School Administration building on the land now owned by the State of Florida off the North Causeway on Barracuda Blvd. The Grant provided matching funds for the renovation. Occupying today some 4,000 square feet of this building, the Artists’ Workshop has grown to over 400 members and has enjoyed a three-fold growth in the number of classes offered and other programs.

🎨 For this , let’s travel back 30 years to May 1, 1996! 🗞️

This clipping from The Observer features a major milestone for the Artists' Workshop in New Smyrna Beach. That evening, Gregory Grand, owner of Artquest School of Art and Design, gave a live portrait demonstration in oils—fresh off a commission to paint the governor of "Abbu Dabbi"!

The article also highlights "The Last Picture Show" exhibit, featuring local legends like Wayne Smith (pictured next to his work, The Net Mender), Frank Bartolucci (LOST TITLE), and Arlene Borger (Richmond Bridge).

It’s amazing to look back at the vibrant arts community that paved the way for local creatives today. Recognize any of these names or faces? Let us know in the comments! 👇

"Art is not a luxury, but a necessity for human survival. It is the thread that weaves our individual resilience into a collective tapestry of community."

The last few weeks at the Workshop have been nothing less than inspiring. 🎨✨ Together, our art keeps us connected, grounded, and impossibly strong.

Since 1958, we’ve learned, created, exhibited, and appreciated art & culture together. Artists’ Workshop is excited to share our new Gallery on Magnolia chapter with you very soon!

Talk about a world-class creative journey! AW Clay Studio Instructor Cynthia Baker is quite a star! Her art studies began as a child in Japan, took her to Paris with the College Art Study Abroad program, and led her to San Diego State College. After teaching art in rural Maine, she brought her talents to Florida, dedicating 20 years to the City of Orlando Pottery Studio specializing in tile-making and clay textures.

If you've spent time browsing local galleries, you’ve likely admired her stunning work at Anthony Bell Creations in NSB or the Artistic Hand Gallery in Oviedo!

Cynthia brings her immense passion and lifetime of experience to the Artists' Workshop clay studio this season. Whether you want to carve intricate tiles or piece together a stunning mosaic masterpiece, you don't want to miss her classes!

"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." – Helen Keller

Executive Director Cayla Bartolucci-Kaualoku and former President + current Gallery Chair Liz Clayton shared a poignant moment as they completed the "last lock up" of our historical gallery on Canal Street, closing the chapter on 48 incredible years in this beloved space.

While saying goodbye to this historic home is bittersweet, our vibrant community of creators and supporters ensures that the Artists’ Workshop spirit will continue to thrive in its next chapter.

Goodbye 115 Canal. Hello 207 Magnolia! We’re excited to open our doors as soon as we get approval. 🎨✨
