“Very exciting to be invited to show alongside Steinberg. Hope he doesn’t mind wherever he is.” — David Byrne

Opening later this month at 125 Newbury, "David Byrne/Saul Steinberg: Influence and Affinity" pairs the works of two artists—separated by generations—who share a sense of wry humor in concert with sharp observation and expansive creativity.

Placing drawings, watercolors, prints, and collages by Steinberg in conversation with drawings and never-before-seen banner works by Byrne, the exhibition highlights the artists’ contact points and shared sensibilities through an installation that emphasizes their overlapping themes and styles across time.

"CHAIR SHOW," a lively group exhibition that celebrates the chair as both fantasy and fact, but most of all as subject, continues for another week at 125 Newbury.

Across a diverse range of works, from objects that bridge the gap between furniture and sculpture to representations of chairs in painting, drawing, and photography, the chair persists as a stage for the body and a charged cultural sign.

CHAIR SHOW
through May 23
295 Broadway, New York

See chairs by David Byrne, Alicja Kwade, Robert Longo, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Louise Nevelson, Adam Pendleton, Lucas Samaras, Julian Schnabel, Joel Shapiro, Arlene Shechet, Kiki Smith, and more in "CHAIR SHOW" at our gallery in Tribeca.

On the occasion of "CHAIR SHOW," read Arne Glimcher's 2008 interview with Lucas Samaras, whose work is featured in the show.

“CHAIR SHOW” is a group exhibition that examines the chair as a receptacle, object, and idea. "It follows the contours of the body, so when the body leaves, it can still give vibes of a person," Samaras says to Glimcher in the conversation, remarking on the notion of the chair.

"CHAIR SHOW" continues at 125 Newbury through May 23.

In 2006, Zhang Huan () returned to China, embraced Buddhism, and transformed his practice. Working in his Shanghai studio, he began collecting ash from nearby Buddhist temples—the remnants of incense burned in prayer.
-
Sorting the ash by color and texture, Zhang developed a technique to use it as pigment, creating haunting grisaille paintings that revisit scenes from China’s past.
Our exhibition at 125 Newbury brings together these ash paintings with works from Zhang’s Memory Door series: low‑relief carvings that merge sculpture and drawing.
-
Begun in parallel, both bodies of work meditate on the fragility of history and the ways memory can both preserve and reshape what came before.
-
"Ash Painting and Performances" remains on view at our space in through April 11.
