Main Window Dumbo Main Window is a bi-monthly, non-profit, public art space in Dumbo, Brooklyn featuring site-specific installation.

It has been an artist-run space presenting the work of New York metropolitan area artists since 1980.

TESS BILHARTZ AT MAIN WINDOW.

‘Waves’ is on view 24/7 during Dumbo Open Studios weekend, April 18-19.
Bilhartz grew up in Dallas, Texas and currently lives and works in New York City. Her paintings and installations build on a lineage of artists who conceive a world beyond visible reality. She works with imagery from storytelling genres like fantasy, sci-fi, and horror that create familiar containers for extreme, absurd, or hidden feelings. She layers symbols like monstrous teeth, a distorted shadow, or an alien handprint with materials such as paint or pencil. Over time, this layering transforms the image to embody tangled interior states.

In the spirit of these genres, she uses this process to suggest that perceived reality is like the surface of a river with hidden currents moving beneath. Bilhartz creates deliberately confounding images where invisible layers of colors and marks structure the visible surface. Ambiguity reigns. Cropping obscures the story that unfolds out of frame. What caused that impression in the sand? Whose hand is resting on a rock? Why is the figure transparent?

This irresolution reflects an interior life that might feel familiar to many: conflicting emotions, changing sense of self, and unsettling unfixed boundaries.

Their process arises from a need to build, to exert physical energy through ritual, and to connect to the long lineage of makers—from ancient stone carvers and weavers to the carpenters, boat builders, and jewelers in their own family. Blending tradition and innovation, Lowry explores the evolving relationship between craftsmanship and narrative meaning and a curiosity about the power of objects to embody memory, resilience, and transformation. Join us for the opening of Circumambulations, a site-specific installation by artist Ben Cowan.

Circumambulation is the act of walking around something, often in a ritualistic context. The paintings in this series are modular and activate the space where they hang. There is also a looping animation component, allowing the works to live in a kind of digital afterlife. The motion of the objects contained within the frames and their framing of sacred architecture, refer to how we create systems to understand death, grief, and loss, through things like metaphor and ritual, and simultaneously reflect on the hope of rebirth and continuing cycles of life.

Cowan’s work has been shown in solo and group shows throughout the United States including New York City’s Deanna Evans Projects, 550 Gallery, The Painting Center, and Spring Break Art Show. FINAL WEEK to see Hatshepsut’s Maw by artist Leeza Meksin. On view through Saturday, November 1.

Continuing her exploration of gender and architecture, Leeza Meksin creates a new site-specific installation inspired by the ecofeminist idea that the world is on fire due to patriarchal abuse and subjugation not just of the planet’s resources but of all Others. In fiery and toxic neon hues, Hatshepsut’s Maw, evokes the irrational fears of the female mouth and genitalia. Using neoprene, polyfil and upholstery tacks, Meksin creates a window display that is at once an outstretched maw, a cushy daybed, and a reflection on the climate and civil catastrophe unfolding before our eyes. Depicting both monumental architecture, such as Hatshepsut’s Mortuary Temple and The White House, she sneaks in imagery of ruined homes destroyed by Hurricane Sandy and the recent LA fires. 

Leeza Meksin is an interdisciplinary artist working in painting, installation, public art and multiples. Her work investigates parallels between conventions of painting, architecture and our bodies. Meksin received her MFA in Painting from Yale University, a BFA from SAIC, and a joint BA/MA in Comparative Literature and Humanities from The University of Chicago. In 2021 she joined the faculty at Cornell University College of Architecture, Art and Planning (AAP).
