Happy Earth Day! 🌱🌎
Today we’re remembering our 2024 exhibition Tall Timber, which explored how mass timber can help us create a more sustainable built environment. By sequestering carbon, timber avoids the environmental costs of steel and concrete. Some engineers believe that, soon, timer buildings will rise to 80 stories. How tall will you go for the planet?

Since its time at the Skyscraper Museum, the exhibition has traveled to the University of Arkansas and a venue in downtown Detroit in partnership with Michigan State University and Bedrock. Tall Timber lives forever on our website, where you can virtually explore the exhibition in full!

On May 27th, The Skyscraper Museum presented architect Lord Norman Foster with the Making New York History Award as more than 200 guests gathered in the Diagrid Club at 425 Park Avenue to salute his contributions to New York City’s skyline.
Toasts were offered to “the current King of Park Avenue,” while pointing to Foster + Partners’ two major towers—425 Park and the new JPMorgan Chase HQ at 270 Park. From his 1985 Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank in Hong Kong to these new supertalls, Foster’s work continues to shape skylines worldwide.
Thank you to Lord Foster and Lady Foster for joining us in New York.

Celebrating the 94th Anniversary of the Empire State Building’s Opening!
On this day in 1931, the Empire State Building opened its doors to the world, standing as the tallest skyscraper for 40 years. Completed in just 11 months, the 1,250-foot tower was a feat of modern engineering, rising more than a story a day.
Though primarily a steel structure, concrete was key to its rapid construction, as the Museum shows in its new exhibition The Modern Concrete Skyscraper. From the caisson foundations to the fireproofing of the steel frame, concrete played a critical role with over 5,000 cement bags delivered to the site daily.
In 1998, Building the Empire State, the first book to explore the construction of this iconic skyscraper was published. To mark this anniversary, check out our book talk for Building the Empire State, the Museum’s first publication, where authors Carol Willis and Don Friedman dove into the history and legacy of the Empire State Building.
Learn more about how concrete shaped the Empire State Building in our current exhibit Modern Concrete and watch our recorded program on the building’s construction through the link in our bio.

The Museum’s focus on mass timber and wood, in conjunction with the exhibition TALL TIMBER: The Future of Cities in Wood, continues this fall with a webinar & book talk on the work of Shigeru Ban Architects on September 16 at 6pm ET. This is a virtual program — online only.

Though it is one of the world’s oldest building materials, wood is still revolutionizing the way buildings are designed and constructed today. It is imperative that everyone – from architects, engineers, and contactors, to clients and the general public – considers how construction practices impact climate change. Timber buildings are not only environmentally responsible, they also make us feel measurably happier, healthier, and more productive.

Shigeru Ban Architects has innovated in wood for over 35 years, creating inspiring spaces that have a positive impact on building inhabitants, communities, and the environment. The firm has built over 65 wood and mass timber projects, from prefabricated plywood houses to parametrically modeled glulam gridshells.

Have you ever seen a building made of paper? Join us to discover how architect Shigeru Ban uses paper and cardboard to create innovative structures as we read the book, Shigeru Ban Builds a Better World by Isadoro Saturno and Stefano Di Cristofaro. Students will learn about different materials used in construction and get the chance to design their own buildings made from paper tubes.

This is an in-person children’s program that meets at the Skyscraper Museum, 39 Battery Pl. Family programs are free! RSVP through the link in our bio. Reservation priority is given to The Skyscraper Museum members. Want to become a member? Summer programs are supported by a Community Partnership with the Battery Park City Authority.
