Thank you to everyone who joined us earlier this month at The Huntington in San Marino, California for “Laura Aguilar in Focus” to honor and view Aguilar’s powerful, intimate photography documenting LA’s q***r Latine community.

The day kicked off with a panel discussion of Aguilar’s work. Moderated by Senior Curator of Photography at The Huntington Linde Lehtinen, the panel included q***r photographer Amina Cruz, Robert A. Day Professor at the USC Roski School of Art and Design Amelia Jones, historian, author, and activist Lydia Otero, photographer, professor, and Aguilar’s longtime studio manager Christopher Velasco, and independent curator and art historian Sybil Venegas.

Following that rich discussion, LA-based photographer Erica Hernandez captured these stunning portraits of attendees and eventgoers were able to partake in curator-led tours of The Huntington’s exhibit: “Laura Aguilar: Body and Landscape, on view until September 7.”

Thank you to our West Coast community for joining us and to our partners at The Huntington for hosting us!

We are incredibly sad to mark the passing of the brilliant scholar, community stalwart, and member of ALM’s History Advisory Committee, Kevin Mumford. Mumford’s contributions over the last year to our interpretive plan brought the same nuance, empathy, and complex historical insight that he brought to all his work. Mumford’s commitment to history, and to nurturing the next generation of scholars, made him a generous and beloved community member.

He will be greatly missed here at the museum, by his students and colleagues at the University of Illinois, and by everyone who was lucky enough to know him.

This Pride Month, we highly recommend revisiting Mumford’s incredible contributions to q***r, Black, and urban history via his books: Interzones: Black/White S*x Districts in Chicago and New York in the Early Twentieth Century; Newark: A History of Race, Rights, and Riots in America; and Not Straight, Not White: Black Gay Men from the March on Washington to the AIDS Crisis.

Rest in power.

Arden Eversmeyer wanted to reclaim the words “old” and “le***an” with pride rather than shame. In 1998, after losing her partner and realizing that many of her Houston peers would die before telling their truth, Arden purchased a small audio recorder and began taping.

This is the story of Arden’s cross-country endeavour, the Old Le***an Oral Herstory Project.

Please join us for an exclusive work-in-progress screening of KICK, an upcoming documentary about trans nonbinary Olympic runner, Nikki Hiltz, America’s fastest 1500m runner. With intimate, present-day vérité, KICK follows Nikki and their partner Emma through a season defined by fierce competition, and struggles in identity and love. Nikki’s story offers a nuanced, humanized, sometimes surprising view of a trans athlete, standing in stark contrast to our sensationalized media echo chambers. After the screening, join us for a talkback and Q&A with director, Julia Schwalb, and producer, Zackary Drucker.
