Closing weekend is Taylor Lee and Peter Chan’s duo show, Crash and Burn, at Another Place.

In Crash and Burn, painter Peter Chan and sculptor Taylor Lee thread through nostalgia, art history, video games, toys, and whatever else lays in their path to create a more energetic and playful world. A dual exhibit of these two artists welcomes the contrast between fast flying robots, painted in vivid, bright hues, and the slow moving stomp of clay creatures, which come to life in clay with scars of flame. Pop culture collides with pre-history in an eye-popping explosion of narrative and pathos, crashing and burning into the visual plane and into our hearts.

In a series of paintings Zoe McGuire explores specific relationships between pollinators and their dependent species. Unlike a naturalist of the 19th century, McGuire paints the relationship between species themselves. Between the Monarch butterfly and the milkweed she unfurls an ecstatic visual language, imbued with organic symmetry and vivid patterns. A flower’s delicate vessel is refracted; rivulets pulse between a mountain range. Each work takes its cues from a specific relationship and moves to the broader, rorschach-like manifestations which attract the viewer, drawing them into the essence of ecological belonging.

In his series of works, Jeremy Olson reminds us of the power of the anthropomorphic gaze, which can relate even to the horrid and non-human. The world is ending or long gone in his works, and yet it is still made in our image. Before a neon blur, a creature’s eyes widen. Another reads a small book while holding a drink; factories smolder in the distance.

Another kind of attachment style is documented which has yet to be defined. Olson foregrounds this task in his austere, vivid, and startling compositions. In brand new attachment style, Olson reminds us that even in the most absurd settings we will continue to seek answers.
