With gratitude for three incredible years, EV Gallery bids farewell. Your energy, your expression, your activism, your passion, your skill, your trade, your craft, your precision, your time, your smiles, your tears, your conversations, your music, your performances, your designs, your ideas led to all of the moments made this space special. To artists, it was an honor to show your work. To friends, family, guests, collectors and neighbors, it was an honor to experience the shows with you. Here’s to new beginnings. Forever grateful to you for being part of our story.

For the record, special gratitude to our mood lifters/smile makers/heart warmers: all the doggy visitors and the 621 fire escape cat.

See you soon!

EV Gallery is pleased to present: “Midnight in the People’s Garden”, a solo exhibition of vibrant night photographs by George Hirose which were shot in NYC Community Gardens over the past ten years. George’s interest in exploring the gardens at night began as an offshoot of his interest in night photography combined with his commitment as a long-time community gardener on NYC’s Lower East Side. This exhibition is a visual celebration of urban garden culture and the mysterious beauty that emerges after the sun goes down. Long exposures and light painting capture details and colors unseen by the human eye after dark. The works in this exhibit primarily focus on community gardens in the East Village and Lower East Side but also include images from the Upper West Side, Brooklyn and Queens.

Historically, the modern age of urban gardening in NYC began in the 1970’s and 80’s when the city was in a fiscal crisis and the landscape was filled with crumbling buildings and rubble strewn lots. These abandoned spaces were reclaimed by surrounding neighbors, who essentially created gardens “by the people and for the people”. Not only did these gardens help beautify and clean up our neighborhoods, they also produced healthy food resources and created safe havens for children and community. The struggle to save our gardens from the onslaught of gentrification and real estate development is a never ending fight and a testament to the strength of our communities.
