The Matisse Méditerranée exhibition (7 May - 8 September) at the was fantastic. The South of France and the Mediterranean in general was a refuge for Matisse; it allowed him to break free from the conventions of Paris. During his Mediterranean visits (and his life while living in Nice) he discovered pathways to ancient civilization, the Near East, and a whole new landscape. This exhibition was the perfect kickoff to Summer!

Tiffany Studios, Pair of Turtleback Lantern Sconces, c. 1902

These extraordinary sconces exemplify Louis Comfort Tiffany’s famous decorative form of using opalescent Favrile glass, which he began experimenting with and implementing in the 1890s. The delicate, iridescent glass, like an opal stone, reflects light and changes color. The beautifully cut and shaped leaded glass is enclosed by dark, austere frames of patinated bronze. The juxtaposition between material comes together to create a unified whole and an exceptional and quite rare example of a pair of lanterns created by Tiffany Studios.

Donegal Arts & Crafts Carpet by Gavin Morton and G.K. Robertson, c. 1900

This hand-knotted wool pile carpet was produced in County Donegal, Northwest Ireland and spurred an industry that created an economic boom for the region. The design of this carpet was inspired by Turkish prototypes, the medieval revivalist aesthetics of William Morris, and typical Celtic motifs.
