If You Complete a Dream...

“The painting captures a moment just after I woke from a dream in which I was lost,” says in an interview with about her new show “Bedimmed Boundaries: Between Wakefulness and Sleep” on view through October 19. “Although my eyes are open and it appears that I’m awake, I’m actually caught in a hypnagogic hallucination—those fleeting moments just before I fully transition into wakefulness.”

The American flag 🇺🇸 is a symbol that simultaneously unites and divides the nation it represents, and has long been celebrated and disparaged by artists enthralled by its power while remaining wary of its application.

Through October 26, ’s “America Seen Through Stars and Stripes (New York)” (1976) is on view in “Flags,” a group show at surveying artworks made using or depicting the flag of the United States.

A portion of the proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to America Votes, the nation’s largest grassroots voter mobilization effort.

Opening Tonight ‼️

Join us tonight 6-8 pm to celebrate the opening of “Bedimmed Boundaries: Between Wakefulness and Sleep,” a new series of paintings and video installation by Wangari Mathenge in which she observes her own sleeping body to derive profound, personal insights into the nature of altered states of consciousness. Cloaked in slumber, Mathenge’s compositions are mesmerizing and perplexing-portraits of her mind as it pursues equilibrium between empirical and imaginary realms.
