Can You Sell $30K Worth of Art at a Single Saatchi Art Fair?
– Yes.
I may have written about Saatchi Art before, but over the past few months more than 2,000 artists have started following me, so I think it is worth returning to this topic and sharing what I have learned from my own experience.
Before opening my gallery, I worked as an artist manager. Part of my job was building and managing artists’ presence on international art marketplaces such as Artmajeur, Artfinder, Singulart, Artsy and, of course, Saatchi Art.
And yes, my artists made sales on all of them.
If you ask me whether an artist should be represented on several platforms, my answer is: ideally, yes.
Each platform has its own geography, audience, collectors and price range. Something that works beautifully for one artist may do absolutely nothing for another.
But there is one principle that connects all of them.
Consistency.
And this is exactly where many artists fail.
You open an account, upload your works, wait for a while, and when nothing magical happens, you eventually stop updating it.
Unfortunately, marketplaces don’t work this way.
And you cannot rely entirely on your gallerist either.
The role of a good gallerist is extremely important. A gallery builds your career, invests time, money and reputation into your work, presents you at exhibitions and art fairs, and introduces you to collectors, art advisors and institutions.
But representation does not guarantee monthly sales.
Your gallerist has other artists too 😁
You need additional sales channels of your own. Instagram and online art marketplaces should work alongside gallery representation, not instead of it.
Now, back to Saatchi Art.
I have personally participated in four editions of The Other Art Fair, managed artists on Saatchi Art, and seen what happens when an artist actually understands how to use this ecosystem strategically.
And yes, the $30K in the title is real.
Actually, I have another Saatchi Art sales story involving three paintings and $35K.
But I’ll leave the interesting part for the carousel 😁
