Field of Play is excited to welcome Wesley Ware as a new member curator with the gallery. Please join us in celebrating Wesley. Thrilled to have you on the team!

Wesley is a painter based in Brooklyn, NY. His watercolor works emerge from a mix of wet-on-wet painting and reactionary mark-making; these pair to draw attention to the natural fluidity of the medium. The paintings display colorful flowing abstractions that evoke natural elements such as leaves, ducks, and running water. Wesley was born and raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He studied Painting at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

“Pink Thrust” by was paired with the Bear Plank, in what was the most demanding event of the Sculpture Holding Contest. Participants got competitive and the intensity in the room was palpable.

“I consider my sculptures to be hybrids, like evolutionary relatives of a functional object and a fossil of an unknown creature. In this vein, I embrace “thingness.” My papier-mache, handmade sculptures are bodily and share our physical vulnerabilities such as asymmetry and fragmentation. As living beings, we are constantly remaking ourselves; every moment is ripe for physical, psychic and emotional metamorphosis. In this vein, my process is experimental and intuitive. Sculptural orientation, scale, and color are subject to change. I know I am done when the piece feels more like a thing than a sculpture, when the thing feels like it was made by something else, somewhere else.”

Anita Trombetta is a Brooklyn-based visual artist who works in sculpture, drawing, and painting. She received her BFA from SUNY New Paltz in 2011 and an MFA from the New York Studio School in 2023. She is a current artist-in-residence at the New York Studio School Project Space.

Be sure to check out Anita’s solo show, “No Such Thing” at The New York Studio School Project Space, 20 Jay Street, Suite 307, on view through June 16th.

“Untitled (boulder)” by in action during the Sculpture Holding Contest, curated by .logsdon. The handoff of each sculpture was a delicate moment. Without experiencing the weight of the sculpture beforehand, the participant had to quickly adjust how much force to apply in order to hold in place against the wall. This event recalls the performance “Body Pressure” (1974) where the performer is instructed to press as much of their body into the wall as possible and then concentrate to increase pressure. Artists have been engaging with concepts of strength for a long time.

“Untitled (boulder)” by is featured in “The Sculpture Holding Contest” on view through June 16th, curated by .logsdon. This ceramic work was paired with the Wall Sit and was the first event of the contest. This event unexpectedly became a bit of a psychological experiment as every participant held the pose longer than the previous attempt. Things got much wilder afterwards.

Priscilla Fusco (b. 1973, Montague, MA) holds a BA in English from Barnard College and an MFA from Hunter College. She works with ceramics and fundraises for the Xerxes Society of Invertebrates through her art. She lives and works in Brooklyn.

Priscilla also curated a solo show of currently on view through June 2nd.

Sunday is the last day to catch Backwaters! Don’t miss Vince Contarino’s compelling work, included in our group show of watercolors, curated by .hap_. Many thanks to everyone who visited, all the artists, and & of Art Hap for putting together a tremendous exhibition.

From the press release:

Vince Contarino makes ink and watercolor drawings in tandem with his larger practice of acrylic painting, which explore the possibilities of abstraction as an infinitely generative language. Tightly controlled mark-making and deliberation intersects with forms that are more loose and improvisational. The tension between geometry and gesture are heightened by how Contarino pushes the limits of each medium.

Vince Contarino is a Brooklyn-based artist whose paintings work in an open dialogue of regenerative image-making through the language of abstraction. His awards and residencies include The Sharpe - Walentas Studio Program and a Fellowship in Painting from the New York Foundation for the Arts. He was featured in “Golden Age: Perspectives on abstract painting today”, published by NUTUREart and his work has been covered in Hyperallergic, The Brooklyn Rail, and SFAQ, among others. He has been a visiting artist at Art Omi, The Wassaic Project, University of South Florida, and was a partner and co-director of Present Company, a Brooklyn-based exhibition and social space. He received his BFA from Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL.

Last week to visit Lauren Comito’s brilliant ‘Stilllife’ series, included in Backwaters, a group show of watercolor works, curated by .hap_.

From the press release:

Lauren Comito’s ‘Stilllife’ series is an investigation of the relationship between image, language, and time in the age of digital image search engines. Google image search queries of the ambiguous phrase, “no comment”, generated images that were printed and built onto reconfigurable foam core blocks, which were then transformed into watercolors on paper. The resultant works traverse art historical genres and movements including still life, portraiture, and cubism, presenting a fragmented view of the everyday.

Lauren Comito is a Brooklyn-based visual artist and educator. Her work has been included in exhibitions at Park Place Gallery, Brooklyn, 25Kent (Wallplay), Marymount Manhattan College in New York, NY, Chashama: A Space to Present in New York, NY, and Slag Gallery New York, NY. She published a limited printed edition with Eminence Grise Editions that has been shown at the Editions and Artists’ Book Fair in New York, Art on Paper in New York and the SOON Paris Art Fair in France. Comito currently teaches at The New School and The Pratt Institute. She has recently been a visiting artist at the Pratt Institute, Rutgers University, Pace University, UMass Amherst, and Sarah Lawrence College. She received her MFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design and her BFA from Tyler School of Art.

The gallery is open today 1-4! Stop by to see the work of Paz Mallea, included in the group show “Backwaters,” curated by .hap_. Curator will be at the gallery to chat about the show and all things art in NYC.

From the press release:

Paz Mallea creates dense abstract compositions that conjure movement and action. She refers to this series of works as “atomic gardens,” as they evoke intertwined floral and plant motifs in perpetual unfolding motion, while also referring to an inner psychological landscape, and the stimulating environment of the city.

Paz Mallea is a Chilean born American artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Her practice includes painting, illustration, animation, and curated happenings. She has exhibited her work at Watercolor Society, Below Grand, Peep Space, See You Next Thursday, Piano Craft Gallery, Wall Frame Affairs, and Deanna Evans Flatfile. Mallea co-founded the animation studio PilMawilla in 2021 and has produced animated music videos for Fire-Toolz, Lipsticism, Silver Liz, Immortal Wound, and M. Wagner. She has completed the DNA residency in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 2018, 2019, and 2020 and she was an artist-in-residence at Utopia 126 in Barcelona in 2018. She received her BFA from Pratt Institute in 2009.

Stop by today 1-4pm to visit the work of Alicia Gibson, included in “Backwaters”, a group show curated by .hap_

From the press release:

Alicia Gibson’s work is both diaristic and imaginative, addressing anxieties and channeling frenetic energy through textual fragments that are deeply personal yet carry arbitrary and slippery meanings. Her “collection” series works outward from an obsession with true crime, considering what objects a serial killer might have saved from their victims, creating compositions that ooze visual seduction with an obliquely sinister underpinning.

Alicia Gibson was born in Manhasset, NY. Solo exhibitions have included Totally Tails at Marisa Newman, NY, NY, Backronym in a Sentence at Grifter Gallery, NY, NY (2021), Friend from Foe at Loyal Gallery, Stockholm, Sweden (2017), Backseat Bingo, Marvin Gardens, Ridgewood, NY (2017), Not in a Million Beers, Real Estate Fine Art, Brooklyn, NY (2017), Purgatory Emporium, CANADA Gallery, NY, NY (2016), and Flip the Script Turn the Tide, Julius Ceasar Gallery, Chicago, IL (2016). She has exhibited at Breeder Gallery, Greece, Rod Barton, UK, Venus Over LA, Howard’s, GA, Adams and Ollman, OR, Carroll and Sons, MA, Nevvan Gallery, Sweden and Stems Gallery, Belgium. Select NY galleries include Lyles and King, Derek Eller, Rachel Uffner, Zurcher, and Underdonk. Her work has been reviewed in Frieze, NY Times, Art News, Frontrunner Magazine, Hyperallergic, MOMUS, Art Papers and the Boston Globe. She received her BA from Boston College, a Post-Baccalaureate from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and an MFA from Hunter College.

Stop by the gallery Sunday 1-4pm to visit “Backwaters”, a group exhibition of watercolor works by Lauren Comito, Vince Contarino, Jacob Frazier, Alicia Gibson, and Paz Mallea. Curated by .hap_

From the press release:

“Rather than offer a comprehensive statement on the state of watercolor today, Backwaters considers the varying practices of several New York based artists whose work goes against this current, and argues for a dynamic range of innovative approaches to the medium as one that privileges intimacy and immediacy.”
