It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Charles Hinman (1932–2026), a pioneer of the three-dimensional shaped canvas and an immensely important figure of postwar American abstraction.
For more than six decades, Hinman created paintings that refused to stay flat, transforming canvas into constructions of color, shadow, and geometric form entering into the space of the viewer. With his work in collections of major institutions across the country and around the world, he remained devoted to his studio, his process, and his singular vision until the end.
He was an inspiration to some of the most significant artists of his generation and of the next generation through his teachings at The Art Students League. Above all, he was a painter who never stopped asking what a painting could be.
At the time of his passing, his work is currently on view in ‘Artists on the Bowery, Part 6: Reframing the Edge’ and will remain on exhibit through August 1, 2026.
We will miss you, Chuck 🖤
