Masamitsu Shigeta Opens next Thursday, Sept 10th. The exhibition marks a new direction in Shigeta’s practice, foregrounding wood carving as a means of constructing the image itself. Working directly into wood panels, Shigeta draws out quiet details within still lifes of potted plants and cityscapes, revealing patterning, texture, and poetry within the surface. Mottled sunlight, the outline of a tree, or a grid of skyscraper windows is defined through incised lines and forms before paint is applied in layers. Scratching and cutting back into the surface introduces contrasting colors and textures, further defining the pictorial elements.
