Huntington for the town of Westchester, now Westchester Square, the HFL continues to be a historic resource for The Bronx community and beyond. Before The Bronx was "The" Bronx, the Huntington Free Library and Reading Room has been open to the public, serving the community. Huntington for the then Town of Westchester, the Huntington Free Library was created "to provide a place where all persons wi

thout distinction of race or creed may assemble for the purpose of reading, study, education and self improvement." The Huntington Free Library has kept to the edict issued by Collis Huntington over 120 years ago, and through various programs, lectures and its collections still serves as an important resource for the entire Bronx.

The Huntington Free Library and Reading Room opened in 1891 as a general reference library. Before it became a central hub for Bronx history, the library showcased some of the nation’s rarest collections of maps. These maps tell many stories, for some of them were produced for countries that neither exists anymore, or were absorbed by another. Although some tell a controversial tale of old style colonialism, it is a time stamp of a point in our history we all can continually learn from.
