A bothie is the Scottish term for a small gamekeeper’s or gardener’s cottage on the estate of a prosperous landowner. In this scene, the gamekeeper himself is not present (perhaps he’s just behind the door preparing a cup of tea), but the tools of his trade are all here: gun, creel, and shawl.

His day’s bag of game lies on the floor alongside a few turnips, maybe destined for a hearty stew. The three dogs, a Gordon Setter, an English Setter, and a Pointer, are fixated on a small cat hidden in the shadows, pawing at a pheasant.

“Bob” was an early imported Gordon Setter from England, arriving in the early 1880s. An inscription on the back of the painting indicates that it was given to August Belmont by Baron de Rothschild.

August Belmont was a noted New York sportsman and banker, representing not only the Rothschilds but also the Habsburg family. His son, August Belmont Jr., was the fourth, and longest-serving, president of the AKC. The town of Belmont and the racetrack Belmont Park are named in their honor.

In this painting, Alexander Davis Cooper offers a somewhat whimsical view of terriers on the Isle of Skye, as one coupled dog seems about to lead the other off one of the island’s craggy cliffs. The black dog would certainly be recognized as a Skye Terrier, but the identity of the other is more of a quandary. It is most likely a predecessor of the Cairn Terrier.

The one ear up and one ear down is a playful flourish by the artist, a device we see in the work of other dog painters of the period. Cairns were long thought to originate on the Isle of Skye and, at the time this painting was made, would likely have been described simply as short-haired Skye Terriers. It was not until 1903 that they officially received their own designation as Cairn Terriers.

Though untitled, the painting could be called Pepper and Mustard after the two coat color varieties of the Dandie Dinmont breed. The title also harkens back to the origin of the breed’s name. Dandie Dinmont was a character in Sir Walter Scott’s novel Guy Mannering, based on a real-life dog owner who ran packs of “Mustard” and “Pepper” terriers across the Scottish border in Northumberland.

The two dogs are shown on a coupled lead, which was commonly used when working dogs in packs. Coupling allowed a handler to manage fewer leads and served as a way to train a younger dog by pairing it with a more experienced companion.

See more Dandie Dinmonts and explore the other Scottish breeds throughout Scotland, The Brave Dogs. On view till July 12th.

Visit us this Saturday, April 18th, for the Scottish Deerhound Breed Spotlight! Compare the real-life dogs to the artworks in the Scotland, The Brave Dogs exhibition. Does this breed look the same as it did in Victorian times?

Landseer was one of Britain’s finest painters of dogs and animals and a favorite of Queen Victoria. His first visit to Scotland was in 1824, and he later painted the 4th Duke of Gordon, famed for developing the Gordon Setter. Landseer produced many Scottish subjects and also illustrated works by Sir Walter Scott.

Here a Scottish Deerhound offers quiet companionship to a recumbent Mastiff. In the background, a Scottish targe (shield) and a deer hoof hang as evocative symbols of Scotland’s past. The targe was banned in Scotland after the ill-fated Battle of Culloden in 1746.
