Society Of Illustrators Founded in 1901, the Society is the oldest nonprofit dedicated to the art of illustration in The USA.

On February 1, 1901 a group of nine artists and one advising businessman founded the Society, and by 1939 the Society had moved to its current headquarters in an 1875 carriage house located at 128 East 63rd Street. In 1981 the Museum of American Illustration was established which now features the art of such legendary artists as Rockwell, Pyle, Wyeth, Kent, Peak, Fuchs and Holland, as well as cont

emporary artists. In 2012 the Society received the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, and created the MoCCA gallery in the second floor. Since then the Society has exhibited works by legendary artists Arnold Roth, Bill Griffith, and Harvey Kurtzman. The Society is also proud to now host the annual MoCCA Arts Festival.

The Society of Illustrators mourns the passing of one of our industry’s giants, Gary Kelley (1945-2026).

Throughout his career, Gary made a significant impact in the field as a beacon of excellence and a thoughtful mentor. In 2007, he was honored with the Society’s most prestigious recognition, the Hall of Fame Award. Gary was one of the most prolific artists in our annual exhibitions, having won over 30 medals in his lifetime. His works are integral parts of our visual culture, and we honor his life and career.

Join us for a conversation with cartoonists R. Kikuo Johnson (No One Else) and comics scholar Caitlin McGurk (The Life and Art of Barbara Shermund) about the legacy of Rea Irvin, the founding art editor at , and his satirical but sweet comic strip, The Smythes, recently reprinted for the first time in a gorgeous oversized book from .

The Smythes—comprised of John, Margie, and their two forgettable children, Willie and Maudie—are a niceish suburban family, restless in their social stature, and eager to climb a sometimes wobbly social ladder. Irvin’s distinct, graceful line renders the Smythes in all their glory and hilarity as they navigate ill-fated dinner parties with pompous socialites, fend off robbers dressed as Santa, and get chased out of restaurants by cleaver-wielding chefs.

🗓️ Thursday, May 7 from 6:30pm-8:30pm
