Barbara Johnson Zuber’s work is rooted in memory, community, and Black American life. Born in 1926 and raised in Harlem, she became the first woman to graduate from Yale School of Fine Arts. Her paintings turn everyday moments into vibrant scenes full of rhythm, color, and emotion.
In this collage, Zuber depicts children flying kites in her native New York, using bold forms, flattened perspective, and vivid color to evoke a familiar scene filled with movement, play, and community.
